The concept of function is useful in development of large-scale systems. However, many engineers who specialize in the area of large-scale system production have more clearly defined the the term function by specifying two types of functions: mission functions and system functions. Mission functions are the abstract goals, objectives and/or purpose of the complete, total system. System functions are defined as the functions provided by a sub-system or component of the total system. The clear separation and definition of these two types of functions is very important.
