GS: "...I think currencies are not unit of measure...".
Maybe.
Still Mike is correct in the respect that any currency as a monetary system
is a standard of value, a sort of reference point, regardless it volatility. (01)
What really needs all attention of the UoM proponents, the Ed's caveats:
"I think.a basic reference ontology for 'quantity' is needed. According to
the International Vocabulary for Measurement (VIM)
http://www.bipm.org/en/publications/guides/vim.html 'measurement unit' is
one class in that ontology, and it is a subtype of
'quantity'. Further, standardized instances of 'measurement unit' belong to
a 'system of measurements' which is intimately related to a taxonomic
decomposition of 'quantity'. So I think the 'basic quantity ontology' is
inseparable from an 'ontology for units of measure'."
A valuable intro into the nature and meaning of Quantity,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantity. (02)
The Units of Measures and Weights ontology effort will work out only as part
of ontological metrology, the basis of scientific, applied, and legal
metrologies, and all existing metrological standards; .ISO 17025, ISO 9000,
ISO 14000, etc.
As a good suggestion, NIST is responsible for maintaining and advancing
scientific and commercial metrology standards, at least in USA, not in
Cyprus (EU). IMO, Ed is the right person for furthering ontological
metrology standards. (03)
