Dear Pat,    (01)

Thank you for the post ... wakes me up (even on a Sunday!)    (02)

Opting-out of endorsing the Communique is definitely one of the
Advisors' prerogatives, when we solicit for endorsements after the
Communique is adopted (at the Symposium).    (03)

[ppy] no ... "appearance of solidarity" (or, for that matter,
"appearance" of anything) is not what we are going for, I suppose,
unless we actually achieved it. Besides, differences in perspectives
and opinion is what would move us forward.    (05)

That aside ...    (06)

Allow me to explain why we changed the Advisory Committees terms of
reference to make the Advisors' endorsement of the communique an
"opt-out" (now) rather than "opt-in" (previously) ... which may sound
bad at first glance.    (07)

At one point[1], we had more Advisors than people endorsing the
Communique, and FabianNeuhaus, at the 2011 postmortem meeting, alluded
us to the fact that "that is not right!"    (08)

This year, Fabian and I worked together to review how to improve on
that whole situation, and, among others, this (change of term of
reference) was what we came up with, as one of the recommendations to
the organizing committee. We both agreed, at worst, we'll get push
back, but then, we will get some people who really matter, to read the
Communique. It's far from perfect, but we think it is an improvement.    (09)

I hope you, and our other Advisors, would bear with us, and accept the
good intentions, which I truly believe, is good for the ontology
community as a whole.    (011)

... the feedback you have since provided, is, of course, invaluable.    (012)

Thanks & regards. =ppy
