I agree that we might construct a concept for data object that is synthetically clean, but do we want to make it as restrictive as you have in the article:

"Data Objects were inextricably bound within a given database"

Arent't there types of data objects other than things in DBs?

"data object" is much clearer [1] i.e., a resource comprised of structured data. Typical representation, for a given perception medium (e.g., the World Wide Web or paper) is a subject->predicate->object, subject->verb->object, entity->attribute->value style of graph pictorial :-)
