Hmm, I never received Michael’s message, will check the archives.

Thanks,

Tim,

Is there any focus on ontologies or other semantic technologies?

The keynote speakers may not cover ontologies and semantics technology. Ian Foster is a Grid builder. Mike Stonebraker, who is not a fan of KR,  does support the use of KOS taxonomies/thesauri to assist in the manual creation of schema mappings - see [1].   Neal Ziring does IA guy, not AI, so I would expect his keynote to cover those kinds of issues.

In Session 2 (Health Care Analytics), Mark Adams will be presenting on caBig, which does have a vocabulary and ontology component. Interestingly, in the future directions section of [2], vocabularies and ontologies are literally at the center of the caBig 2.0 (slide 28).

Peter Fox (RPI) and Milt Halem (UMBC) are both presenting in session 4 (Science Analytics).  I would hazard a guess that there might be some mention of Ontology, Epistemology/Doxastics (as they relate to Provenance), and hopefully some of the  semantic problems in Long Term Data Preservation during one or other of their presentations :-)

The following session on business analytics has the chief architect of Lexis/Nexis, who have done semantic and ontology work with some randoms in Fort Collins.

NIST will hold a Big Data Workshop [1] 13-14 June 2012 in Gaithersburg
to explore key national priority topics in support of the White House
Big Data Initiative.  The workshop is being held in collaboration with
the NSF sponsored Center for Hybrid Multicore Productivity Research, a
collaboration between UMBC, Georgia Tech and UCSD.

This first workshop will discuss examples from science, health,
disaster management, security, and finance as well as topics in
emerging technology areas, including analytics and architectures.  Two
issues of special interest are identifying the core technologies
needed to collect, store, preserve, manage, analyze, and share big
data that could be standardized and developing measurements to ensure
the accuracy and robustness of big data methods.

The format will be a mixture of sessions, panels, and posters. Session
speakers and panel members are by invitation only but all interested
parties are encouraged to submit extended abstracts and/or posters.
The workshop is being held at NIST's Gaithersburg facility and is free
and open to all, although online pre-registration by 6/6 is required.  A
preliminary agenda [4] is available which is subject to change as the
workshop date approaches.
