Peter,

Not at all. There is no downside. Apple's acquisition of Siri is a bellwether event signaling major market opportunities to come.

First, the Siri acquisition means that Apple will be tailoring its operating systems to handle dynamic semantic applications for smart devices (and laptops) in an ecosystem where small developers can get paid for innovations. That's not a bad thing. That's a good thing.

Second,  as for the Google vs. Apple vs. Microsoft vs carriers competitive landscape, see Morgan Stanley's  “(Global) Mobile Internet Report” for more background on the magnitude of the stakes and the opportunities. This report includes my favorite quote of the year (so far):

"Mobile Internet is largest market opportunity we’ve seen in the history of the Technology sector.”

Important ramifications for cloud computing in both consumer and enterprise contexts. The MS report has four treatments. Each piece is available online at www.ms.com/techresearch

Third, Siri is more than a product; it is the poster child for a new category of products and services. With this in mind, who cares if Siri is on an Android or whatever? Apple's acquisition validates that AI and semantics are the coming thing in mainstream consumer (and professional, and office, etc.) markets.  Someone else can and will build something Siri-like for other platforms. That only means more opportunity for all of us.

+1, kudos to Tom for seeing this through.

The only downside is that Siri will never see the light of day now on any other platform than the most proprietary, locked-down, ecosystem that is Apple - a pity, but that's business!

On a separate point: why is the press so hyped up about this being part of Apple's challenge to Google? Where do they suppose Siri - and for that matter, a large proportion of Apple apps - get much of their search and mapping data from and what do such queries tell Google except even more about every single user? Both Apple and Google stand to gain from this and similar acquisitions.
