LinkedIn is like Facebook for professionals. For overall exposure, a
Facebook presence is good. For anything work-wise LinkedIn is better. I
think most people there, like me, use it for work related networking.
Those who have a Facebook presence I think use it for more casual,
interpersonal things. If anyone in our space has only one of these, it
would more likely be LinkedIn I think.    (01)

For example, before I presented at the Ontolog Forum last night, I
posted a short link saying that I was presenting, and why, and a
shortened URL, onto LinkedIn. I did a similar posting on Plaxo. I also
put a short tweet on Twitter, with less info. I did nothing on Facebook
but if I did it would have been "I have a presentation this evening" or
even "nervous about a presentation this evening", or a "That went well"
afterwards. I did post a "That went well" type of message on Twitter,
but that only confused people who did not see the original tweet. I'm
probably a bit of a naive user on all these things, but that might give
some idea of the sorts of ways people approach them, though everyone
does things differently.    (02)

As for the Facebook groups, I have joined several but don't really look
at them. Most of the chatter goes on in what they call "status" but is
really a root message for a conversation, and is very interpersonal in
nature. Groups mainly contain one-to-many messages from the organisers,
with very little chat, so it is primarily a good medium for linking
people to other places, which is what you want I think. It is
interesting to notice how the semantics of FB features differs from the
intended semantics, as people use it in more and different ways.    (03)
