On Thursday, February 7th, 2008, the highly productive launch of this
year's Ontology Summit took place. Detailed minutes of the launch can
be viewed at http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2008_02_07,
supplemented as usual with a full audio recording of the event (see
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2008_02_07#nid18Z2).    (06)

At the launch, four committees that have been formed to support the
summit were introduced. Their principal responsibilities are:    (07)

· Organizing Committee, charged with the overall
responsibility for the summit    (08)

· Content Committee to manage the ongoing discussion beginning
with the launch and lasting until the face-to-face meeting in April    (09)

· Logistics Committee overseeing the arrangements for the
face-to-face meeting    (010)

· Advisory Committee responsible for outreach and liaison with
other relevant organizations    (011)

The five initial discussion threads were also identified, along with
those responsible for tracking and synthesizing the discusions:    (012)

• Communiqué and Mission Statement    (013)

• Synthesis by the Organizing Committee    (014)

• Ontology Repository Architecture    (015)

• Synthesis by Michelle Raymond and Ravi Sharma    (016)

• Ontology of Ontologies    (017)

• Synthesis by Michael Gruninger and Pat Hayes    (018)

• Quality / Gatekeeping    (019)

• Synthesis by Barry Smith (co-champion was solicited)    (020)

• State of the Art Repository Work    (021)

• Synthesis by Frank Olken    (022)

There was strong involvement from those on the call, and everyone is
encouraged to join in the ongoing technical discussions that will be
taking place on the [ontology-summit] mailing list.    (023)

*Thu 07-February-2008* - This is the (virtual) kick-off for the
3rd Ontology Summit, a joint initiative by NIST-Ontolog-NCOR
(along with other co-organizers and co-sponsors.) The theme
adopted by the community for Ontology Summit 2008 is: "Toward an
Open Ontology Repository. The Summit will comprise three months
of virtual discourse - delving into the key issues like
architecture, ontology, quality and metric, as well as a survey
of the state-of-art in "Open Ontology Repository." The discourse
culminates in a two-day face-to-face workshop (April 28 & 29,
2008 at Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA) as part of the NIST
Interoperability Week 2008 program. Dr. Steven Ray (NIST) will
chair this session. He will be introducing the "Ontology Summit
2008" objective, organization, process, deliverables and
preliminary plans. That will be followed by an open discussion,
during which we solicit your input and participation to make this
initiative a success, in terms of how it could help advance the
field of ontology, ontological engineering and semantic
technology, and advocate their adoption into mainstream
applications and international standards. ... Please refer to
details at the session wiki page at:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2008_02_07    (035)

*RSVP* by by emailing me at <peter.yim@xxxxxxxx> offline so that

before in similar virtual events.) Please state
"OntologySummit2008 Launch" in your registration response.    (036)

Please note that this session will be recorded, and the audio
archive is expected to be made available as open content to our
community membership and the public at-large under our prevailing
open IPR policy (ref:
