Brand,

Thanks for the reminder about semantics – I still believe what I said then. Regarding your second point, I believe you know Al Jones from my shop, who has been attending the SSHWG. Also, Evan Wallace stopped in once or twice I think. At this point, that’s all we can do, given our various commitments.

Steve, I am excited about the prospect of another Ontology Summit and it brought to mind two things, first the role of ontology in semantic interoperability from your quote in the Semantic Universe (endorsements section - http://www.semanticreport.com/):

“I believe that semantic technologies are still greatly underappreciated in terms of their potential benefits. Coming from a documentary standards perspective, I am convinced that future information exchange standards will ultimately be specified in formal, semantic terms that provide not only computer interpretability, but also the degree of rigor and precision needed for a well-defined standard. This precision should dramatically reduce many of the interoperability problems we see today.”

And second a recent request from Kang Lee at NIST who leads and hosts the Interagency Sensor Standards Harmonization WG, that I participate in, for help from your group with ontologizing and harmonizing the multiple sensor standards.

Whether or not the ontology community selects this topic for its 2008 Ontology Summit, I would hope that you could have someone on your staff attend the next SSHWG Meeting at NIST on January 15th.

Best wishes for a safe and enjoyable Holiday Season.

Brand

As we have for the past two years, we are planning on holding a face-to-face meeting of the ontology community at NIST in the spring of 2008. We are ironing out some logistic details, but it is looking like a likely date is late April.

The purpose of this email is to solicit ideas for the topic we tackle this year, and then undertake an online discussion culminating in the meeting. One possibility is to arrive at a resolution by the community to support an online ontology repository somewhere. This topic is going to be discussed anyway at the January 3 rd Ontolog Forum conference call – you may want to call in. There are numerous other possibilities for the Ontology Summit – please submit your favorites.
