I think there are situations where this is a huge opportunity to use an
upper ontology for this type of integration, and it goes something like
this:    (01)

In the kind of work we do (systems integration) it is rare that the
mapping is one to one.  It is almost always subsumption of some variety.
Let's say you have a table/ class of cities your airline flies to.  You
want to tie to a geography ontology.  You can't make your cities class
equivalent to the geography one, or all cities will become airline
destinations (which they are not).    (02)

Let's say you have twenty such systems (maybe different transportation
modes, maybe where people live, different airlines whatever).  With an
upper ontology you've got 20 bridges to build.  Without one, you have to
negotiate all the pairwise combinations (not only tedious, it may be
intellectually hard to determine what the relationship is between two
sets of cities).    (03)

I see a big benefit in nominating an upper ontology.     (04)

Ah, or is the N^2 claim based on a requirement that in order to apply 
whatever inferences are available at A to C, a direct mapping is 
required? Still, that seems to be an implementation question and not one    (016)

That is a particular methodology of mapping is being presumed. I would 
assume once the mapping is complete, then the outcomes of inferencing 
will be the same. Yes?    (018)

I have usually encountered the N^2 comment when a particular vocabulary 
is being advocated. Noting that an implied mapping is being peformed 
even by those who advocate a particular vocabulary, but that the implied    (019)

mapping is not (usually) available for others to inspect or use. (The 
same can be the result using topic maps. There is no requirement that a 
mapping in an implementation, which may be commercial intellectual 
property, be disclosed. For the most part, I think greater disclosure 
can potentially lead to more interoperability. But, there are tradeoffs 
and reasonable people will draw the line on disclosure at different 
places.)    (020)
