Dear ALL,    (02)

We had another very productive session today (April-17). The latest
working draft of our OntologySummit2014_Communique was presented and
reviewed. Again, the co-chairs walked everyone through a
section-by-section review, and focused our discussion on: (1) General
comments on content -- missing ideas, changes in emphasis,
disagreements about content, and (2) Editorial comments.    (03)

I am writing to inform everyone that the full proceedings of the
session - slides, chat-transcript, audio recording, attendee-roster,
etc. - are all available online now. You can access that by going to
the "Archives" section of the session page at:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2014_04_17    (04)

Those who still want to provide input to the Communique should do so
real soon (you can access the working draft on google-doc[1]) and
provide your comments there. Please do so before Thursday 24-Apr-2014.    (05)

Again, if you still haven't registered for the
OntologySummit2014_Symposium, please do so now - at:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OntologySummit2014/WorkshopRegistration    (06)

We will look forward to your joining us, same time, next Thursday
(Apr-24) for session-15, when we will be tackling "Final Symposium
preparation and logistics". Developing
details can be found on the session page at:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2014_04_24    (07)

... Our Summit General Co-chairs had made a plea to each and everyone
of you to help review and provide input to this year's Communique.
Please review the developing version at:

This is the final opportunity to suggest substantive changes, as the
plan this year is to have the Communique finished *before* the
Symposium. Anyone who has a professional interest in Big Data,
Semantic Web, Linked Data, and Applied Ontology, and would want to
influence what goes into the OntologySummit2014 Communique, should
definitely be at the session.    (019)

... RSVP now, if you haven't already! (see details below)    (020)

Re: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2014_04_17    (031)

Dear Colleagues,    (032)

After a very productive session last week, when the community review a
first working draft of our OntologySummit2014_Communique, pulled
together by Michael Gruninger and Leo Obrst (our co-lead editors)
based on syntheses material from the four technical track champions,
the editors will be presenting an advanced draft at this week's
virtual session, in an attempt to finalize our Communique before we
proceed to the OntologySummit2014_Symposium (in Metropolitan
Washington, DC on April 28 & 29) when this document will be presented
for formal adoption and release.    (033)

As mentioned earlier, developing the Communique is an important next
segment of our Ontology Summit process, that distills the learning
from the last few months' (and thousands of hours of) work and
discourse. The Communique will represent the collective position that
this community will assume, and the open message we would want to
deliver, with respect to the theme of this Summit. Again, If you care
about, and would want to influence what goes into the Communique,
please make sure you come to this (and next week's) session.    (034)

********************* Details ************************    (040)

This is our 9th Ontology Summit, an annual joint initiative by NIST,
Ontolog, NCOR, NCBO, IAOA & NCO_NITRD with the support of our
co-sponsors. The theme adopted for this Ontology Summit is: "Big Data
and Semantic Web Meet Applied Ontology."    (041)

Since the beginnings of the Semantic Web, ontologies have played key
roles in the design and deployment of new semantic technologies. Yet
over the years, the level of collaboration between the Semantic Web
and Applied Ontology communities has been much less than expected.
Within Big Data applications, ontologies appear to have had little
impact.    (042)

This year's Ontology Summit is an opportunity for building bridges
between the Semantic Web, Linked Data, Big Data, and Applied Ontology
communities. On the one hand, the Semantic Web, Linked Data, and Big
Data communities can bring a wide array of real problems (such as
performance and scalability challenges and the variety problem in Big
Data) and technologies (automated reasoning tools) that can make use
of ontologies. On the other hand, the Applied Ontology community can
bring a large body of common reusable content (ontologies) and
ontological analysis techniques. Identifying and overcoming ontology
engineering bottlenecks is critical for all communities.    (043)

OntologySummit2014 will pose and address the primary challenges in
these areas of interaction among the different communities. The Summit
activities will bring together insights and methods from these
different communities, synthesize new insights, and disseminate
knowledge across field boundaries.    (044)

Following earlier Ontology Summit practice, the synthesized results of
this season's discourse will be published as a Communique.    (045)

See developing details at:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OntologySummit2014 (homepage
for this summit)    (046)

---    (047)

These sessions, like all Ontolog virtual events, are open and free of
charge. Anyone who is interested, or (better still) who may have
something to contribute, is welcome. Please refer to event details on
the session pages, to which the hyperlink is given above, where you
will find session agenda, conference call dial-in, slides and other
pertinent information. Please help us spread the word by relaying this
message to other relevant community mailing lists, and ask colleagues
of your who may also find these sessions to be of interest to come
join us.    (048)

*RSVP* by emailing Peter Yim at <peter.yim@xxxxxxxx> offline (or add
yourself directly to the session page if you are already an Ontolog or
Ontology Summit community member) so that we can prepare enough
resources to support everyone. [Please state clearly the date of the
session you are registering for in your email.] ... All respondents
will be subscribed (if they aren't already so) to the
[ontology-summit] mailing list so they are participate in the virtual
discourse.    (049)

These sessions will be recorded and made available in a publicly
accessible archive. Therefore, before participating, please make sure
you are cognizant of our IPR policy (ref:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?WikiHomePage#nid32).    (050)

p.p.s. please note that the OntologySummit2014 Symposium, the two-day
event that culminates this Summit's discourse, scheduled for April 28
& 29, 2014 in the Washington DC Area, USA, is now open for
registration. Both on-site and remote participation are supported.
Participation is free-of-charge, but prior registration is required.
