*REMINDER* (02)
The Ontolog virtual event with invited speaker, Professor Bill
McCarthy (Michigan State University) is coming tomorrow - Thursday,
05-Jun-2008 (starting at 10:30am PDT / 1:30pm EDT / 17:30 UTC). (03)
According to Professor Bill McCarthy, the ontology spectrum of Dr. Leo
Obrst (MITRE) poses a challenge for researchers and developers trying
to build standards for business process interoperability, because it
envisions a notion of clear structural progress toward the goal of
full semantic expressiveness. In Bill's opinion, this notion of
structural progress needs to be augmented with the idea of domain
completeness which he considers to be the ability of a domain theory
to explain the separate and distinctly different aggregation level of
its theory components. (04)
In this session, Professor McCarthy will discuss these notions of
structural and domain progress by using the example of the REA
ontology (originally posed as an accounting domain theory) and its
realization in one final international standard and in one ongoing
standards development project: (05)
1. The Open-edi Business Transaction Model (ISO/IEC 15944-4); and (06)
2. The REA Specialization Module for the UN/CEFACT Modeling Methodology (UMM). (07)
Bill will also discuss some more general ontology development ideas
that arose from consideration of these projects at the NSF-sponsored
Workshop on Financial Interoperability that just occurred Last month
(May 12-13 in Arlington, Virginia). (08)
Anyone interested in the topic, especially those working on developing
standards and can see the value in applying ontology methods and
formalizations, should come join us and exchange insights with Bill
and with each other. (09)
*RSVP* by e-mailing the sender <peter.yim@xxxxxxxx> off-line (if you
aren't already on the [ontolog-invitation] list, kindly include your
name, affiliation and job title as well) if you are planning to attend
and haven't already responded. (010)
We look forward to having you at the session. Please refer to all
agenda and call-in details on the session page, whose link appears at
the top of this message. (011)
Regards. =ppy (012)
