Topic:
*Interaction of Ontology and Database in the Information System*    (010)

*Abstract*: (by Tatiana Malyuta)    (011)

The presentation discusses some issues on the interaction of
Ontology and Database in Information Systems (IS):    (012)

  * Distribution of "responsibilities" between Ontology and
Database:    (013)

o what are the role and place of Ontology in IS,    (014)

o how much semantics to leave within the database, and    (015)

o how to integrate the Database semantics with Ontology.    (016)

  * Symbiosis of Ontology and Database:    (017)

    o during the IS life-cycle,    (018)

o how changes and growth of Database will affect Ontology,    (019)

o how evolution of Ontology will be reflected in Database,    (020)

o and how to support this relationship and benefit from it.    (021)

  * Using Ontology for efficient data utilization in general and
data integration in particular.    (022)

  * Using Ontology for support of Human-Computer Interfaces.    (023)

The discussion will relate to previous talks on this mini-series
about importance and benefits of ontology in IS, using ontology
in database design, communicating to the database from ontology,
and improving quality of data with the help of ontology.    (024)

*About the Speaker*:    (025)

Tatiana Malyuta started her career in Ukraine. Her research,
industry and teaching experience and interests are connected to
data and databases. She has a PhD in Computer Science, and her
doctoral thesis dealt with presentation and management of
imprecise data in relational databases. She participated in
design and implementation of databases for numerous information
systems in Ukraine and later in USA. Her latest projects involve
design and implementation of metadata and ontology for special
applications, such as:    (026)

o the Downtown Brooklyn project that prototypes a media-rich
interactive navigation system in a media-rich document
environment at New York City College of Technology.    (027)

o the NSF Small Business Innovation Research Award 0060675
"Maximum Entropy Data De-Duplication" and Phase II 0216213 "A
Machine Learning Approach to Approximate Record Matching" at
ChoiceMaker Technologies Ltd.    (028)

Currently, Tatiana is an Associate Professor of Computer Systems
Technology Department of the New York City College of Technology
of the City University of New York where she is coordinating and
teaching advanced database courses. She wrote a textbook
"Physical Design and Implementation of Relational Databases" and
conducts a scientific colloquium on newest data technologies.    (029)

This will be a virtual session over an augmented conference call.
The session is expected to start with a 1 Hour presentation
followed by a Q&A and discussion between the participants and the
speaker. The entire session will be recorded and made available
as open content under the prevailing Ontolog IPR policy (see:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?WikiHomePage#nid32).    (031)

As usual, this Ontolog event is open to all. I look forward to
having you at this session. Please pass the announcement along to
those who might be interested to join us too.    (032)

*RSVP* by by emailing me at <peter.yim@xxxxxxxx> offline so that
we can prepare enough resources to support everyone. (Kindly
include your affiliation and job title if you aren't already a
member of the Ontolog community.)    (033)
