Ontolog Mini-Series on "Database And Ontology" (Session-7) - Thu 10-May-2007    (111J)

Conference Call Details    (111O)

Attendees    (112F)

Background    (112O)

This is the 7th event of the "Database and Ontology mini-series" of talks and discussions, during which this community will be exploring the landscape, issues and interactions between databases and ontologies.    (112P)

This is a community-driven set of activities, and is probably long overdue. On 15-Aug-2006, TatianaMalyuta (who just joined the community after participating at our 23-Jul-2006 face-to-face workshop at Stanford, brought up her request for the Ontolog Forum to delve into the subject of "Database and Ontologiy." An almost unprecedented flurry of online responses were received from the community. It was decided that we could systematically pursue the subject by mounting a min-series on the matter at hand.    (112Q)

A planning meeting for this mini-series took place on 31-Aug-2006. MatthewWest was invited to champion the effort, and a "Program & Technical Advisory Team" was formed, comprising MatthewWest (Lead), AdrianWalker, AtillaElci, ChrisPartridge, LeoObrst, PeterYim, SusieStephens & TatianaMalyuta.    (112R)

The community is requested to contribute their thoughts by posting to [ontolog-forum] or to the DatabaseAndOntology wiki page (and/or its subpages). We hope to accumulate and synthesize the knowledge gathered and compile it into a written deliverable (a paper or even a handbook) that we could publish this collaboratively authored work to other relevant media and channels (like relevant conferences or the wikipedia.)    (112T)

Abstract (by TatianaMalyuta):    (1135)

The presentation discusses some issues on the interaction of Ontology and Database in Information Systems (IS):    (1136)

The discussion will relate to previous talks on this mini-series about importance and benefits of ontology in IS, using ontology in database design, communicating to the database from ontology, and improving quality of data with the help of ontology.    (113I)

About the Invited Speaker:    (113J)

Tatiana Malyuta started her career in Ukraine. Her research, industry and teaching experience and interests are connected to data and databases. She has a PhD in Computer Science, and her doctoral thesis dealt with presentation and management of imprecise data in relational databases. She participated in design and implementation of databases for numerous information systems in Ukraine and later in USA. Her latest projects involve design and implementation of metadata and ontology for special applications, such as:    (113K)

Currently, Tatiana is an Associate Professor of Computer Systems Technology Department of the New York City College of Technology of the City University of New York where she is coordinating and teaching advanced database courses. She wrote a textbook “Physical Design and Implementation of Relational Databases” and conducts a scientific colloquium on newest data technologies.    (113N)
