The Ontolog community is pleased to announce that Researcher and
Entrepreneur, Dr. Tom Gruber, the scientist who defined the term
"ontology" in the sense we apply to its use in computer science,
artificial intelligence and the semantic web these days, will be

Title: *Grande Challenges for Ontology Design*
(or is it Vente, I can never remember) (09)
*Abstract*: (by Tom Gruber) (010)
Why bother with ontology design, particularly when it involves
the trouble of collaborating with other people and their peculiar
ideas? How does one guide a design process with any kind of
objective notion of a Good Result? I think that if we do not
start from this question, we are wasting our time. Outside the
context of some shared goals, even arguing about what "ontology
is" is, at best, ironic. (011)
In this session I will frame a discussion about ontology design,
using the model of engineering design that has brought tremendous
success to electronic and physical engineering disciplines, and
to some extent software engineering. My goal for the session is
to identify some important and practical problems with objective
engineering requirements that can motivate and guide the work of
this community. (012)
*About the Speaker*: (013)
*Dr. Tom Gruber* is a researcher and entrepreneur with a focus on
systems for knowledge sharing, collaboration, and collective
intelligence. He did foundational work in ontology engineering
and is well-known for his definition of ontologies in the context
of Artificial Intelligence. The approaches and technologies from
this work are precursors to the infrastructure for today's
Semantic Web. At Stanford University in the early 1990's, Tom was
a pioneer in the use of the Web for collaboration and knowledge
sharing. He invented HyperMail, a widely-used open source
application that turns email conversations into collective
memories, which chronicled many of the early discussions that
helped define the Web. He built ontology engineering tools and
established the first web-based public exchange for ontologies,
software, and knowledge bases. During the rise of the Web, Dr.
Gruber founded Intraspect, an enterprise software company that
pioneered the space of collaborative knowledge management.
Intraspect applications help professional people collaborate in
large distributed communities, continuously contributing to a
collective body of knowledge. For the Web 2.0 era, he co-founded
RealTravel.com, which aspires to be the best place on the web to
share knowledge and experiences about travel. Realtravel provides
an environment for a community of travel enthusiasts to create
beautiful travel journals of their adventures, share them with
friends and family, and learn from other like-minded travelers.
With techniques for combining structured data with user
contributions, and a machine-learning based recommendation
engine, it is also an example of collective intelligence in both
the Semantic Web and Web 2.0 senses of the word. (014)

This will be a virtual session over an augmented
conference call. The session is expected to start with
a 1 Hour presentation followed by a Q&A and discussion
between the participants and the speaker. The entire
session will be recorded and made available as open
content under the prevailing Ontolog IPR policy (see:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?WikiHomePage#nid32). (016)
As usual, this Ontolog event is open to all. I look
forward to having you at this session. Please pass the
announcement along to those who might be interested to
join us too. (017)
*RSVP* by by emailing me at <peter.yim@xxxxxxxx> offline. (018)
Regards. =ppy (019)
