This sounds interesting, and I would recommend perhaps broadening the
theme to trends: current serialization formats JSON/XML, binary formats
(e.g. protobuf), emerging graph databases in general (Neo4j, OrientDb),
and columnar/key-value persistence. Each of those families of technologies
have different implications. Also, I think the question of
post-deserialization/unmarshalling is important as well from a technology
perspective. For many applications you still have to take those data or
models and put them into a data-structure or object model to work with
