I agree that this is a very important topic. The Healthcare community
is also deeply involved in the interaction between their terminologies
- some but not all in DLs - and their medical record structure, and
there is a constant re-invention of wheels in both healthcare and bio
fields of representations for both more general knowledge - i.e.
contingent rather than universal statements - and for expressiveness
that goes beyond OWL's limitation to tree structured models (the root
of John's comment on not being able to represent a rectangle properly,
I think, certainly the root of not being able to represent a benzene
ring properly.    (04)

I would be very interested in pushing these topics in some sort of
workshop. I'm also putting together a preliminary paper for KCAP - or
somewhere - on some of the simpler but still frequently confused
related issues around template based (frames, UML) and DL based
representations.    (05)

Many of the questions we get are still of roughly the form - "Now I
have an ontology, how do I use it with what I am already doing?" or
"…what else I need to do?"    (06)

I'd also be interested in knowing more about Francisco's and Nancy's issues.    (07)

Regards    (08)

Alan    (09)

(ps. Apologies if you get this twice. I don't know if my IAOA
membership renewal has gone through so this may bounce on the members
list. I agree this should move to the Ontolog list.)    (010)

Nancy and John,    (014)

I agree with both of you that this is an important topic. May I
suggest that you move the discussion to the [ontolog-forum] list (for
which John is already subscriber, but Nancy isn't yet*)    (015)

To recap, [iaoa-member] is a member-only list with a password
protected message archive, and is not intended for open discussions.
IAOA has designated [ontolog-forum] as the general discussion list for
ontology-related topics, for its membership, too.    (016)

Nancy, please email me offline.

That is an important issue. The semantics of any subject is tightly
bound to the structures of the subject. The term 'architecture' is
used for structures consciously chosen by a human architect. That is
true for most computer hardware and software.    (021)

But many subjects have "architectures" designed by nature and discovered
by scientists. Other architectures develop from spontaneous patterns
of human behavior -- for example, the patterns of city growth before
and after the introduction of automobiles.    (022)

These patterns, implicit or explicit, are critical to ontology.
Some notations -- OWL, for example -- permit only one kind of pattern:
trees. But most architectures are much more complex than trees. Even
the simplest house has rectangles, which cannot be specified in OWL.    (023)

I'm sending this out to the listserve. I'm interested in how to combine
semantic-related software components within various kinds of
architectures, maybe having a workshop on this topic. It appears to me
that this is still a research area and that currently groups are each
devising their own methods, maybe re-inventing the wheel. Are there
common practices? Could there be?    (026)

Example types of architectures could be portals, database systems (I
know about Oracle's work), cyberinfrastructures (as for EarthCube-- I
can't get definitive responses from whoever drew their architecture
diagrams), cloud systems, information systems in general, maybe
coordinated with HPC, etc.    (027)

I see SemTech has a category this year called semantic information
architectures, which may or may not be related to this.    (028)

Thank you,
     Nancy Wiegand    (029)
