This problem has been investigated in the classification literature;  I remember seeing a description for one such scheme described in a late 50's/early 60's issue of Aslib.  A lot of the early CRG members worked for, or had a background in, chemistry and chemical engineering.  For example, Brian Vickery, who was mostly responsible for the reception of faceted classification into the English language, was employed by ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries), where his job title was The Librarian of Butterwick.
