I'm writing to let everyone know that proceedings of today's Ontolog
Forum OWL 2 (session-2) event is now online. (01)
This panel session was chaired by Professor Ian Horrocks (co-chair of
the W3C OWL 2 Working Group; University of Oxford). Professor Horrocks
brought together a panel of experts who presented some
state-of-the-art work under the general topic of "OWL 2: Tools and
Applications." This excellent session was, again, very well attended.
To our panelists - Mr. Matthew Horridge (Manchester), Dr. Andreas
Harth (Karlsruhe), Dr. Timothy Redmond & Dr. Tania Tudorache
(Stanford), Dr. Evren Sirin (Clark & Parsia), Mr. Eric S. Chan & Dr.
Zhe Wu (OASIS-ICOM & Oracle) - as well as their colleagues who had
researched and developed the excellent work that were presented today,
we want to express our deepest appreciations. (02)
The full proceedings - including agenda, abstracts, slides, audio
recording, transcript of the in-session chat, as well as the final
list of attendees/registrants are all online now, and can be accessed
from the session page on the OntologWiki at:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2010_08_05 (03)
On behalf of the community, I would like to take the opportunity to
thank Professor Horrocks, once again, for the brilliant trilogy (the
July-22, July-29 and this Aug-5 sessions) that he has championed and
produced over the last three weeks at the Ontolog Forum. The knowledge
he has helped disseminate and the enthusiasm he has managed to
generate through these events, will no doubt, create a lasting impact
on the community and the field. Thanks to him, and to all who
participated in making the work available, the archives of these
sessions, represent another key contribution to the collective body of
knowledge that this community is building together. (04)
I would also like to thank everyone who joined us. Today's
presentations were so rich, so interesting and so informative, that no
one wanted to cut them short. We ended up not being able to feature
the open discussion segment as planned. As mentioned at the end of the
session, we will defer that to the [ontolog-forum] discussion list.
Therefore, if there were questions or remarks you were planning to
bring up, please go ahead and raise them by replying to this thread,
or start a new subject, as appropriate. (05)
Sincerely. =ppy (06)
for and on behalf of the
ONTOLOG co-conveners, (07)
Peter Yim
Leo Obrst
Kurt Conrad (08)

To: "[ontolog-invitation]" <ontolog-invitation@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> (023)
We have the good fortune of having invited Professor Ian Horrocks
(University of Oxford, and co-chair of the W3C OWL 2 Working Group,
among other roles) to share his knowledge and insights with us in the
next three weeks. He will give his invited talk this week, and then
champion back-to-back sessions on "OWL 2" in the two weeks that
follow. I am, therefore, really excited to announce the following
events and am inviting you to come join us. (024)

***************************************************** (029)
* "Scalable Ontology-Based Information Systems" - Thu 22 July 2010 -
Ontologies and ontology based systems are becoming increasingly
important in meeting the demand for more powerful and flexible
information systems. Requirements for such systems include the need to
deal with incomplete and semi-structured information, to integrate
information from heterogeneous sources, to employ richer and more
flexible schemas, and for query answers to reflect both knowledge and
data. Provision of such enhanced capabilities must, however, be in
addition to, and not instead of, the well-established features of
existing database systems, in particular their robust scalability.
Achieving this is, of course, extremely challenging. In his
22-Jul-2010 invited talk, Professor Ian Horrocks (University of
Oxford) will present some recent research efforts that tackle this
problem, including investigations of tractable fragments, new
algorithmic techniques, new optimisations and the exploitation of
relational database technology. ... See details (agenda, dial-in
information, etc.) on the session page at:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2010_07_22 (030)
* "OWL 2: The Next Generation" - Thu 29 July 2010 - This is the first
of two back-to-back sessions devoted to the "newly" adopted OWL 2
standard. In this session, Professor IanHorrocks (co-chair of the W3C
OWL 2 Working Group) will focus on telling us what this Web Ontology
Language (OWL) standard, adopted less than a year ago (27 Oct 2009 to
be exact), is all about. Professor Horrocks will start by providing
some background on OWL, then explains what is new in OWL 2. He will go
on to explain how each of the three OWL 2 Profiles (OWL 2 EL, OWL 2 QL
& OWL 2 RL) are defined, and what they are best suited for.
Participants are welcome to come find out or discuss other aspects of
OWL and OWL 2. We will have ample time for an open Q & A and general
discussion after Professor Horrock's presentation on the OWL 2
standard. ... Please refer to details on the session page at:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2010_07_29 (031)
* "OWL 2: Tools and Applications" - Thu 5 August 2010 - This is the
second of our two back-to-back sessions devoted to OWL 2. Our session
chiar, Professor Ian Horrocks has brought together an expert panel of
OWL 2 researchers and developers to show us some of the
state-of-the-art in OWL 2 tools and applications. Again, we will have
about ample time for open discussion after all the panel briefings.
The panelists and their presentations will include Mr. Matthew
Horridge (Manchester) on "The OWL API;" Dr. Andreas Harth (Karlsruhe)
on "The NeOn Toolkit;" Dr. Timothy Redmond and Dr. Tania Tudorache on
"Protege 4;" Dr. Evren Sirin on "Pellet;" and, Mr. Eric S. Chan & Dr.
Zhe (Alan) Wu on the "Application of ICOM with Oracle Semantic
Technologies." ... Please refer to details on the session page at:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2010_08_05 ...
RSVP now! (032)
These sessions are delivered as augmented conference calls (webinars).
Like all Ontolog virtual events, they are open and free of charge.
Anyone who is interested, or (better still) who may have something to
contribute, is welcome. Please refer to event details on the session
page, to which the hyperlink is given above, where you will find the
session agenda, conference call dial-in, slides and other pertinent
information. Feel free to pass this invitation along to colleagues who
may also find these sessions to be of interest. (033)
*RSVP* by emailing Peter Yim at <peter.yim@xxxxxxxx> offline with your
name, affiliation and session you are attending (or add yourself
directly to the session page if you are already an Ontolog or OOR
community member) so that we can prepare enough resources to support
everyone. [Please state clearly the date of the session you are
registering for in your rsvp message.] (034)
These sessions will be recorded and made available in a publicly
accessible archive. Therefore, before participating, please make sure
you are cognizant of our IPR policy (ref:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?WikiHomePage#nid32). (035)
