Proceedings: OKMDS (session-08) Concluding Event - Thu 2008.05.29 (01)
The 8th and final event of our "Ontology in Knowledge Management and
Decision Support (OKMDS)" mini-series of activities, representing a
joint NASA-Ontolog-KMWG collaboration, took place on Thursday
29-May-2008. (02)
Upon an inspiring talk jointly given by Ms. Jeanne Holm, (Chief
Knowledge Architect at NASA/Jet Propulsion Lab and Co-chair of the US
Federal Knowledge Management Working Group (KMWG)) and Mr. Andrew
Schain (Chief Technology Officer at NASA/Head Quarters), this OKMDS
series that has been going on for almost 8 months came to a successful
conclusion. The talk was entitled "Connecting People Through
Semantics" which really help put the applications of semantics in
perspective. (03)
The general conclusion from those who were involved with this series
agree that, as a joint community, organizers, speakers, participants,
we have, through exploring at the intersection, collectively managed
to expand the scope on the subject matter. This is especially true for
those who are focused more on a specific field, whether they be
knowledge representation/ontology, knowledge management, decision
support. The series has also fostered collaboration among people who
have not been working together traditionally; and provided a wonderful
educational resource. (04)
A huge "thank you" goes to to all members of the organzing committee
for putting the series together; to all panelists and speakers for
sharing with us their insights and for bringing the invaluable content
and knowledge; and to everyone who was able to participate at the
sessions, whether in the "real world" or "virtual world" setting. (05)
Proceedings of the May-29 session has been captured on our wiki page, at:

All resources (agenda, proceedings, attendees, slides, audio
recordings, ... ) for the sessions are archived on the respective
session pages. You will be able find a listing of all the OKMDS events
under:

(The link at the end of each entry: "ConferenceCall_yyyy_mm_dd" should
take you to the respective session pages.) (07)
We invite everyone to revisit the contents of these sessions, as they
represent some of the best work being done around each of the specific
topics covered. (08)

*REMINDER* (013)
The 8th and concluding event of the joint NASA-Ontolog-KMWG "Ontology
in Knowledge Management and Decision Support (OKMDS)" mini-series is
coming tomorrow - Thursday, 29-May-2008 (starting at 10:30am PDT /
1:30pm EDT / 17:30 UTC). The session will be chaired by Ms. Jeanne
Holm from NASA/JPL. (014)
Speaking at this final episode of the OKMDS mini-series will be Ms.
Jeanne Holm (Chief Knowledge Architect of NASA/JPL) and Mr. Andrew
Schain (Chief Technology Officer at NASA Headquarters). They will
explore with us the connections between ontologies, knowledge
management, and decision support and how are they actually used in
applications at NASA. Come for an overview of the key learnings from
this exciting mini-series that has brought speakers from around the
world and diverse fields, and has spanned almost 8-months. Tomorrow's
interactive discussion will highlight the important findings from each
of the speaker sessions. This session will show how the contributions
of the speakers and all of you in this community can be applied within
an organization. NASA's team will demonstrate using semantic
technologies for expertise location (POPS), how international
ontologies for space are being addressed, and how KM methods and
technologies are being applied for decisions on Earth and Mars. (015)
Similar to other sessions on the OKMDS mini-series, this virtual event
will be offered in our normal 'real world' augmented conference call
settings, and also (simultaneously) at the NASA/JPL Explorer Island in
the "Second Life" 'virtual world' settings. [... The latter is for
those who are familiar with, or who would want to explore the
possibilities of virtual world events. Again, an attendee will be able
to attend the session remotely just by having phone and Internet
access. Slides and audio recording of the session will be made
available after the event too. ] (016)
Join us tomorrow when our invited gurus are expected to share with us,
some of the state-of-the-art research and implementations on
hypermedia discourse that would "make sense" in terms of harnessing
collective knowledge to solve problems or support decisions. (017)
*RSVP* by e-mailing the sender <peter.yim@xxxxxxxx> off-line (if you
aren't already a [kmgov] or Ontolog member, kindly include your name,
affiliation and job title as well) if you are planning to attend and
haven't already responded. (018)
We look forward to having you at the session. Please refer to all
agenda and call-in details on the session page, whose link appears at
the top of this message. (019)
