Per,
There is a major UK Universities
project, covering ten universities, lead by Chris McMahon at Bath on the long
term retention of knowledge, though I never remember the acronym (KIM?). This is
separate from the UKOLN activity, also at Bath.
I'd also be interested in the
results of such a project, but it is seen as currently to long term for
industrial investment. (You may have come across an article by me in
the quarterly journal of the Norwegian national archive on long term retention
of CAD, which is an entirely different set of problems.)

Hi Ontology forum
I'm currently working with a document and
hope some of you can lead me to some relevant work within the topic
"Preservation of semantic value". I have several challenges with writing
on the topic. I'm not sure if I have found a proper breakdown of the problem,
and I'm unsure whether I use the proper academic terms in my literature
search.
If you have the time, please read through the
following text and I hope you have some feedback to me. Document as used below can be any type of data relevant
for long term preservation, e.g. text files, drawings, video, etc. Further
information : http://research.dnv.com/longrec/
----------------------------------
Longrec project scope has defined a set of
prerequisites for being able to use documents over time. These are:
- Finding the document
- Reading the document
- Present / view / render the
document
- Trust the document
But if you do not understand the document is
it then useful? In the Longrec Understand work package we look into
areas of changes with semantic impact. These areas of change are:
1. How documents
are used /procedures
2.
Laws and regulations 3. Who use the
documents 4. Presentation of
documents 5. Symbol/terminology
related to the actual topic/concept 6. Knowledge on the
actual topic/reference 7. Document /data about
an object/referent 8. Countermeasures and
use of semantic technology to assure correct understanding of documents in
aeon. May be split into:
·
Procedural and administrative countermeasures
9. The object /
referent itself (a ship versus a document describing a ship)
Further in this document we focus on state of
the art related to changes in area: 5 to 9.
