One important class of application that could be enhanced by the use
of semantic technologies would be "Decision Support Systems." (02)
A whole spectrum of improvements can potentially be realized -- from
the use of weak semantics to improving collaborative filtering applied
to factors affecting the decision and cross-impact analyses, ... all
the way to strong semantics that could be employed to enable/improve
dynamic mathematical models. (03)
An earlier work by (myself) Peter Yim, Jonathan Cheyer and Ted Gordon,
(in collaboration by a bunch of other who are among current Ontolog
members now) in "The State of the Future Index (SOFI) System," [1] may
help demonstrate the point. SOFI is a measure of the 10-year outlook
for the future. It is constructed with key variables and forecasts
that, in the aggregate, depict whether the future promises to be
better or worse. ... The SOFI system can be applied to our global
future (as the original application was made), as well as to the
future of nations, industries, and other domains that need to be
studied and analysed. (04)
I purport that this class of ontologically-driven decision support
system will promise huge ROI and may find its way into applications
like Policy Decision Support, Corporate Strategic Management,
Financial Engineering, etc. (05)
