The categories you listed below amount to a (simple) taxonomy, with one
level. So the taxonomy is there. (01)
Where does a taxonomy fit into a conceptual data model? An existing
taxonomy can be helpful in creating a conceptual data model. For
example, suppose you are creating a conceptual data model for a library
(a good classroom-type example), and there is an existing taxonomy for
"knowledge media" that contains categories such as books, CDs, videos,
magazines, etc. You may choose to have a subject area within your
conceptual data model for each of these media types - or you may have a
single subject area called "Knowledge Resource" that represents all of
them, with an attribute (perhaps in your conceptual data model as
attributes sometimes are included in conceptual data models - otherwise
in your logical data model) called "ResourceType". (02)
Of course, the first approach will necessitate the addition of new
subject areas as new media become available (for example, no one knew of
CDs 30 years ago), while the second approach can remain stable as new
media become available. So this factor (the maintenance factor) will
weigh into your choice of which approach to use. (03)
Hope that helps,

What you need depends on what you will be using your model for and how
it will be used. In general, however, it is safe to say that a
traditional taxonomy will be inadequate to describe an enterprise
model. An ontology will be the preferred knowledge classification for
that purpose. The reason is, that in an enterprise model one wants to
specify relations between entities (e.g. "John Doe has SSN
735-22-9898"), and a classical taxonomy has only one relation - the
hierarchical subtype relation. (08)
However, the term "taxonomy" has been improperly used generically to
refer to any knowledge classification that contains a hierarchy. If the
intention is to use an ontology to create the enterprise model, then
there is a lot of information on the web, widely scattered, much of
which may be relevant to what you want to do. (09)
For an introduction to ontologies and building ontologies, the Protege
web site (http://protege.stanford.edu/) is a good place to start, and
the Protege ontology development guide will provide some basic
information: (010)
http://protege.stanford.edu/publications/ontology_development/ontology1
01.html (011)
There are a number of enterprise architectures in existence. The
federal government has one, and a simple ontology has been created from
that EA. References can be found at:
http://web-services.gov/fea-rmo.html
If you are just starting, taking a look at that may give you some useful
ideas. (012)
If you want to hunt for existing ontologies that have particular terms
in them, try Swoogle:
http://swoogle.umbc.edu/
here you will find over 100 ontologies with the word "enterprise" in it. (013)
Or just google the web with "enterprise" and "ontology" and browse
trough the > 2 million pages there. (014)
Good luck. (015)

Subject: [ontolog-forum] Where does a taxonomy fit into a conceptual
datamodel? (018)
This week, a member of our TaxCop (Taxonomy Community of Practice)
group
posted this question. (019)
"I am working on developing an enterprise wide conceptual data
model. I
wanted to know how developing a taxonomy is useful for the data
model.? (020)
My background is microbiology and library science. I have only a vague
idea
about what an "enterprise wide conceptional model" is. Since the
membership
of Ontolog forum seems to be very technical, I would like to know how
you
would answer this question? Here is some more background for the
question: (021)
Here is what I have to do. I have several budgets such as Finance,
Human
Asset etc. Now I am categorizing my Finance subject area into
following
: (022)
Fund Management
Payment Management
Cost Accounting
Receipt Management
Asset Management
Now I can sub categorize any of these category , i.e. Fund
Management is
categorized into following:
Account Structure
Budget
GL Account
Audit Finding
Available Funding etc
Now you can see, I am developing this category, so where is Taxonomy
here? Here is description of my Fund Management : (023)
"Funds Management activities capture the highest level of financial
data
and summarizes and maintains account balances by fund structure.
Funds
Management is also the primary tool for carrying out the Agency
responsibility of establishing a system and maintaining official
records
for ensuring that it does not obligate or disburse funds in excess
of
those appropriated and/or authorized. Information captures processes
involved with Funds Management include budget preparation, budget
formulation, funds allocation, budget execution and funds control." (024)
Does this description mean to Taxonomy?
