Frontiersman and Silicon Valley visionary, on Thursday, September 1, at
9:30 AM, at the GSA Auditorum, 1800 F ST NW. The talk is entitled:

Although best known for inventing the computer mouse, Doug was a pioneer of
human-computer interaction and his lab at SRI, the Augmentation Research
Center, was the second node on the ARPANET (precursor of the Internet) and
served as the first Network Information Center for all ARPNET nodes. In
the 60's, long before the personal computer revolution when most
individuals had no direct interaction with computers, his team developed
the "building blocks" for the fundamental user interfaces that continue to
evolve today (hypertext, bit-mapped screens, multiple windows, groupware,
and precursors to the graphical user interface). (06)
Doug is one of the earliest and most influential proponents of the
development of computers and networks to help cope with the world's
increasingly more urgent and complex problems. His insights around human
endeavor and exploration reflect his profound professional and personal
contributions over four decades. His bootstrapping message and methods for
creating high-performance organizations provides a sound scaffold to
address unprecedented collaborative capacities demanded by national
challenges. (07)
Dr. Engelbart has authored over 25 publications, and generated 20 patents,
including the patent for the mouse. He is the recipient of many awards
including the 1997 Lemelson-MIT Prize (the world's largest single prize for
invention and innovation), and the 2000 National Medal of Technology, the
highest award for technological achievement in the United States. (08)
