Hi All -- (01)
Congratulations to Peter Yim for arranging an excellent discussion with
Jim Hendler today. (02)
In the discussion, I asked Jim for his thoughts about how to work
towards interoperability of rules systems for reasoning over ontologies
and the semantic web. Part of his reply (if I recall correctly) was
that one should start with something simple that works, and then
incrementally extend it. (03)
The question of interoperability of rules systems was the subject of a
recent W3C workshop [1]. In a paper in the workshop [2], I floated the
idea that, since there are diverse commercial and other rules systems --
that are unlikely to be replaced by a single standard any time soon
-- one could start simply by working towards a standard for message
based interoperation. The paper [2] suggests that there would be
significant advantages in making the messages readable by non-technical
folks. (04)
There was some post-workshop online discussion about this, starting at
[3] with the suggestion that there are three different kinds of
semantics that could work together to make the SW more meaningful. (05)
Would the Ontolog community be interested in continuing a discussion on
this kind of topic? If so, there's a presentation available, and/or we
could Wiki-ise it. (06)
Thanks in advance for your thoughts about this. (07)
