Dear ALL,    (02)

We had another solid panel session todday (Feb-13) with Professor Ken
Baclawski and Professor Anne Thessen co-chairing the first Track D
session, entitled: "Tackling the Variety Problem in Big Data - I." The
session featured an overview of "Big Data" and how Ontology and
Semantic Technology can potentially help tackle the "Variety" problems
in Big Data by Professor Baclawski. Three very exciting talks
followed, given, respectively, by Mr. Eric Chan, Mr. Nathan Wilson
and Ms. Ruth Duerr. Those presentations were followed by a call from
the OntologySummit2014 Hackathon co-champion, Mr. Anatoly Levenchuk,
encouraging the community to send in proposals for Hackathon Projects
(and to actively sign up to participate,) in anticipation of the
Hackathon Launch scheduled for Feb-27. An enthusiastic open discussion
among the panelists and the participants ensued.    (03)

I am writing to let everyone know that the full proceedings of the
session - slides, chat-transcript, audio recording, attendee-roster,
etc. - are all available online now. They can be accessed by going to
the "Archives" section of the session page at:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2014_02_13    (04)

Once again, we shall look forward to your joining us again, same time
next Thursday (Feb-20) for session-06. The session will be devoted to
" OntologySummit2014: Synthesis-I & Communique Table-of-Content
Discussion." Developing details will be on the session page at:

Dear Colleagues,    (033)

After very well attended "OntologySumit2014: Big Data and Semantic Web
Meet Applied Ontology" sessions we've had so far, we are pleased to
invite you to join us, again, this Thursday (Feb-15) for
session-05, the first of the two panel discussions for Track-D
"Tackling the Variety Problem in Big Data." This Track is
co-championed by Professor KenBaclawski (Northeastern University),
Professor Anne Thessen (Arizona State University). This session rounds
up the first cycle of synchronous discussions framed around the four
content tracks.    (034)

After this, we will, in the session next week, do a review and
synthesis of the discourse that has transpired so far, and attempt to
establish a structure for the Ontology Summit Communique that we will
all contribute to.    (035)

****************** Headlines ******************    (036)

Please join us this Thursday at the Ontology Summit virtual session.
Thereafter, activities will be rolling out every week, until end

This session will begin with a short introduction by the chair, with
an overview of the space in focus, followed by briefings from invited
experts showing how various industrial developers and researchers
tackle the Variety Problem in their Big Data projects.    (044)

After the talks by the panelists, there will be time for Q&A and an
open discussion among the panel and all participants.    (045)

********************* Details ************************    (048)

This is our 9th Ontology Summit, an annual joint initiative by NIST,
Ontolog, NCOR, NCBO, IAOA & NCO_NITRD with the support of our
co-sponsors. The theme adopted for this Ontology Summit is: "Big
Data and Semantic Web Meet Applied Ontology."    (049)

Since the beginnings of the Semantic Web, ontologies have played key
roles in the design and deployment of new semantic technologies. Yet
over the years, the level of collaboration between the Semantic Web
and Applied Ontology communities has been much less than expected.
Within Big Data applications, ontologies appear to have had little
impact.    (050)

This year's Ontology Summit is an opportunity for building bridges
between the Semantic Web, Linked Data, Big Data, and Applied Ontology
communities. On the one hand, the Semantic Web, Linked Data, and Big
Data communities can bring a wide array of real problems (such as
performance and scalability challenges and the variety problem in Big
Data) and technologies (automated reasoning tools) that can make use
of ontologies. On the other hand, the Applied Ontology community can
bring a large body of common reusable content (ontologies) and
ontological analysis techniques. Identifying and overcoming ontology
engineering bottlenecks is critical for all communities.    (051)

OntologySummit2014 will pose and address the primary challenges in
these areas of interaction among the different communities. The Summit
activities will bring together insights and methods from these
different communities, synthesize new insights, and disseminate
knowledge across field boundaries.    (052)

Following earlier Ontology Summit practice, the synthesized results of
this season's discourse will be published as a Communique.    (053)

See developing details at:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OntologySummit2014 (homepage
for this summit)    (054)

---    (055)

These sessions, like all Ontolog virtual events, are open and free of
charge. Anyone who is interested, or (better still) who may have
something to contribute, is welcome. Please refer to event details on
the session pages, to which the hyperlink is given above, where you
will find session agenda, conference call dial-in, slides and other
pertinent information. Please help us spread the word by relaying this
message to other relevant community mailing lists, and ask colleagues
of your who may also find these sessions to be of interest to come
join us.    (056)

*RSVP* by emailing Peter Yim at <peter.yim@xxxxxxxx> offline (or add
yourself directly to the session page if you are already an Ontolog or
Ontology Summit community member) so that we can prepare enough
resources to support everyone. [Please state clearly the date of the
session you are registering for in your email.] ... All respondents
will be subscribed (if they aren't already so) to the
[ontology-summit] mailing list so they are participate in the virtual
discourse.    (057)

These sessions will be recorded and made available in a publicly
accessible archive. Therefore, before participating, please make sure
you are cognizant of our IPR policy (ref:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?WikiHomePage#nid32).    (058)
