Ontolog members,

The Ontolog Board of Trustees discussed sharing this with the Ontolog membership, and approved this. This book was just released from MIT Press.

Note that neither the Ontolog Board of Trustees nor Ontolog endorse this product, since Ontolog is an open and non-commercial community of practice. However, we do want to provide Ontolog members with opportunities to obtain professional resources at a discount. In this case, the 30% discount code is available to our members, if they are interested.

The book (quoting from the MIT Press notice):

Building Ontologies with Basic Formal Ontology by Robert Arp, Barry Smith and Andrew D. Spear:  This important new work on applied ontology covers theoretical components, design practices, and practical applications, providing a comprehensive introduction to the field of applied ontology that is of particular relevance to biomedicine. Distinguishing between different kinds of ontologies and taxonomies, the book also presents the core features of the Basic Formal Ontology (BFO), now used by over one hundred ontology projects around the world, and offers examples of domain ontologies that utilize BFO. Drawing on concepts not only from computer and information science but also from linguistics, logic, and philosophy, Building Ontologies is a long-overdue guide to the theoretical foundations and practical principles of using ontologies to categorize scientific knowledge.

The discount code for the Ontolog Forum and its members is MONTOLOG30. This code is now active for use on our website (mitpress.mit.edu), and can be used more than once, for both the print and ebook edition. It’s valid until the end of September 2015.”

Thanks,

Leo Obrst

On behalf of the Ontolog Board of Trustees
