The new “HoloLens” headgear by Microsoft will support a virtual reality view projected on top of normal vision, somewhat like google glasses, but with much deeper graphics, according to this article:

For the IoT, a common problem is how to flip the settings on a device that costs $15 but which the user will want to direct whimsically.  The $15 total cost doesn’t leave much budget for a user interface.  But this “Holographic” 3D enhancement of the living space with virtual controls makes it a whole lot easier to configure interfaces to IoT thingys.  The incremental cost of a GUI for that $15 device is zero if the user already bought the VR gear.

They’re offering a free upgrade to Win10 for this year to present Win7, Win8 and XP users, but the HoloLens isn’t quite ready for production yet.  They’ve been working on it for seven years.

Nevertheless, as we consider the IoT and its many species, we should consider that virtual reality interface to be coming within the year.  It will make a huge economic difference, and provide much better quality action because of the richer interfaces.

So the capability is soon coming for average consumers to walk through living spaces with a holographic view of IoT devices and interfaces as they walk and talk.  This makes a big difference – the widespread availability of virtual reality equipment will make more new devices operationally feasible, for even the very cheap applications.

So this is disruptive technology wrt the IoT, and it’s right around the corner.  This is an opportunity for ontologists to devise tools to operate that IoT internet.
