The next NCBO Webinar will be presented by Mike Kellen from Sage Bionetworks on "Accelerating Health Advances through Open Challenges" at 10:00am PDT, Wednesday, May 1. Below is information on how to join the online meeting via WebEx and accompanying teleconference. For the full schedule of the NCBO Webinar presentations see: http://www.bioontology.org/webinar-series.
ABSTRACT: Sage Bionetworks is a nonprofit organization working to transform the biomedical research space into a new paradigm in which precompetitive analysis in basic research can enable faster and better advancements in biomedical discoveries. To this aim, Sage has developed Synapse, a software platform that delivers the underlying infrastructure to enable online communities of networked collaborators to analyze clinical, genomic, and other biomedical data. Posing research questions as open challenges on Synapse has proven an effective mechanism to catalyze the formation of these communities, as evidenced by our experiences hosting the Sage / DREAM Breast Cancer Prediction challenge in 2012 and developing the 2013 DREAM challenges program. These challenges can be seeded or enriched by the use of large public datasets such as the TCGA collection of tumor genetic data. In this seminar, Dr. Kellen will discuss the Synapse technology platform and data repository, and its potential to impact large-scale collaborative research. SPEAKER BIO: Dr. Kellen is the Director of Technology Platform and Services for Sage Bionetworks, where he leads efforts to develop Synapse and other Sage technology initiatives. Prior to joining Sage, Dr. Kellen worked in a commercial bioinformatics startup where he brought several technology products to market and held positions in engineering and product management. He holds a PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Washington.
