French is particularly
adequate for this sort of word play because (contrary to
English, for example) it is a stressless language (i.e., all
syllables are pronounced with equal stress).
French is not really stressless, but stress is not
particularly significant at the individual word level. It is
more significant at the phrase level, and is of great
pragmatic importance.
Hmmm ... This makes me feel like Monsieur Jourdain in Molière's "Le
Bourgeois Gentilhomme" when he found out that he had spoken prose
all his life without knowing it! :-D
I agree that stress at the conversational level is used in French
(and any other language) to carry mood and situations - e.g.,
urgency, authority, deference, plea, etc., ... (hence I'd agree with
your "pragmatic" epithet). Indeed, one may pronounce: "Je n'en ai
rien à faire" using several distinct stress patterns depending on
mood. But the phrase is ideally prononced without any stress. Thus,
one could not make any difference between "contre nous de la
tyrannie!" and "Comte, renoue, de là tire Annie!" ... ;-)
Below is a sample of what this "stressless" property of French may
provide in termes of double/hidden meanings:
. . .
