ABSTRACT: HL7 (Health Level 7) is a highly influential collection of standards for healthcare-specific data exchange between computer applications, and HL7’s Clinical Document Architecture forms part of the government’s criteria for Meaningful Use of electronic health record technology. We provide a brief outline of the current version of HL7 and its ‘Reference Information Model’, focusing specifically on ontologically-related features and pointing to a number of areas of concern. SPEAKER BIO: Barry Smith is a prominent contributor to both theoretical and applied research in the field of biomedical ontology and the editor of the HL7 Watch blog. He leads the dissemination efforts of the National Center for Biomedical Ontology, and is the author of over 200 peer-reviewed publications on ontology and its applications.
