7th International Conference on Semantic Technologies for Intelligence, Defense, and Security - STIDS 2012

With the conference just around the corner, we would like to emphasize some of the highlights of this year's agenda:

1) Keynotes:

Wednesday, 10/24 - Michael Dean
Dr. Dean is a visionary of Semantic Technologies who worked as the Principal Investigator for Integration and Transition in the DARPA Agent Markup Language (DAML) Program, which catalyzed the Semantic Web, and has served on W3C Working Groups for RDF, OWL, and RIF. His speech will convey a pragmatic view of the Semantic Web and Ontologies, coming from someone who can give a privileged first person account on the subject.

Thursday, 10/25 - Jay Holcomb
Mr. Holcomb recently joined the Department of Homeland Security’s National Protection & Programs Directorate (NPPD), Office of Cybersecurity and Communications (OC&C), Critical Infrastructure Cyber Protection and Awareness (CICPA) department. He is an internationally renowned expert in Cybersecurity and the Program Lead for Cyber Integration at the Control Systems Security Program/ICS-CERT. His presentation will bring an insider perspective of how Semantic Technologies are supporting the DHS efforts in Cybersecurity.

2) Poster/Demo Session and Social:

On Wednesday, 10/24, starting 5 P.M. our presenters will join the audience in a special session with posters, demonstrations, and videos of their research. This is a priceless opportunity to get acquainted with the features and details that aren't normally addressed in the time-constrained presentations, while having the chance to discuss with the researchers on potential collaborations. The warm cocktail treats, beverages, and spirits bar that already are a trademark of STIDS' social events will facilitate the task of browsing through the various research works on display.

3) Panel

On Thursday, 10/15, Dr. Leo Obrst will moderate a panel discussion entitled "Cyber Ontology: Is it the World Squared?"
The panel features top experts in the use of Semantic Technologies for Cybersecurity in their respective areas of application. The audience will have a unique opportunity to interact with the panelists and explore their wealth of real-world knowledge in this vibrant subject.

4) Tutorials

On Tuesday, 10/23, we will be convening two distinct tutorials that are complementary in nature:
a) Ontology for Intelligence, Defense and Security, and
b) How to Manage a Semantic Technology Project
Both tutorials bring the views of a strong team featuring leading experts in their respective fields. This is a unique opportunity for catching up with the latest advances in Semantic Technologies from different perspectives. More information can be found at the tutorials page.

5) Best Paper Awards

On Thursday, 10/24, Dr. Daniel Maxwell will present the best paper award, which will be offered to the authors of the paper judged as the most exciting contribution to this year's conference. The award is meant to recognize the excellence of our technical program and contributors, as well as to promote the continuing efforts of our community to push forward the state of the art in Semantic Technology in STIDS areas of interest. The best paper award committee is formed by members of the STIDS 2012 Program Committee that are not only recognized experts in the field, but who also have no involvement or conflict of interests with the authors of the papers accepted for publication at STIDS 2012. More information can be found at the award page.

6) Paper presentations

Last but not the list, the strong quality of our growing technical program is by itself a main attraction of the conference. Each paper accepted for presentation was reviewed by at least three program committee members and selected on the basis of their academic strengths, research quality, and pertinence to the field of semantic technologies. This year we had contributors from different areas of application, from different countries, and addressing diverse key problems in our area.

There is still time to register online. We strongly recommend you to do so, since there is a limited availability of registration kits and walk-ins may not receive a STIDS shirt and other benefits of full registrants.

We look forward to seeing you in Fairfax next week!
