We had a huge turnout and an absolutely wonderful session today. (01)
Session chair Steve Ray opened the session by telling what motivated
his organizing this session on schema.org. That was followed by
Ramanathan V. Guha's brief on the backdrop and the status of the
schema.org activities today. Guha was joined by his colleague Dan
Brickley, who shepherds the day-to-day activities of schema.org (at
Google) and manages the relationship between schema.org and other
standardization communities. They elegantly portrayed their activity
as one that addresses an audience of webmasters, where they intend to
keep things very simple, very scalable, and present a compelling value
proposition. The briefing was followed by an extended Q & A and open
discussion, which was substantive and inspiring. (02)
The full proceedings of the session, including the chat-transcript,
audio recording, etc. are all available online now in our archives.

A huge "Thank You!" should go R V Guha and Dan Brickley for sharing
their insights with us. Appreciations should also go to everyone who
participated at the session and contributed to the dialog today. (04)

******************* Abstract ************************** (019)
Schema.org provides a collection of schemas, i.e., html tags, that
webmasters can use to markup their pages in ways recognized by major
search providers. Search engines including Bing, Google, Yahoo! and
Yandex rely on this markup to improve the display of search results,
making it easier for people to find the right web pages. Many sites
are generated from structured data, which is often stored in
databases. When this data is formatted into HTML, it becomes very
difficult to recover the original structured data. Many applications,
especially search engines, can benefit greatly from direct access to
this structured data. On-page markup enables search engines to
understand the information on web pages and provide richer search
results in order to make it easier for users to find relevant
information on the web. Markup can also enable new tools and
applications that make use of the structure. A shared markup
vocabulary makes easier for webmasters to decide on a markup schema
and get the maximum benefit for their efforts. So, in the spirit of
sitemaps.org, search engines have come together to provide a shared
collection of schemas that webmasters can use. (020)
This session will be structured as a Q&A session where Google Fellow
Ramanathan Guha will provide a brief introduction to the Schema.org
activity and then answer your questions regarding the relation between
this work and the broader ontology world. (021)
