John and Doug,    (01)

Word net has relationships among words, word class structuring, though of a
limited variety, and it has template sentences into which slots are filled.
That requires some sort of unification process (by the USER of WN) that
binds facts into the template sentences. To me, that smells like deduction
using rewriting rules.      (02)

Why isn't that enough structure to call it (loosely, admittedly) an
ontology? What else do you consider within the definition of ontology, but
which WN does not have, and must have to qualify for that moniker?    (03)

-Interoperability?    (06)

The following point has to be clarified:    (07)

> But isn't WordNet the ontology being used...    (08)

WordNet is *not* an ontology. WordNet is an important
lexical resource that is widely used for interpreting
texts in natural languages.    (09)

It is true that many people have *aligned* their ontologies
with WordNet synsets. But those alignments definitely do *not*
imply that the meanings of the aligned terms are identical.    (010)

The only implication is that the terms from each ontology that
have been aligned to a particular WordNet synset have some kind
of *vague* and *undefined* similarity in meaning.    (011)

Please look at slides 63 ff of the following talk:    (012)

    http://www.jfsowa.com/talks/iss.pdf    (013)

Note the telecon on Friday, where several of the people
mentioned in those slides will be talking. In the discussion
period at the end of the session, you can ask them questions
about these issues (or any others that come up in their talks):    (014)
