Overview: The clinical
informatics group in the Division of Biomedical Statistics and Informatics at
Mayo Clinic is offering a 3-6 month Summer/Fall internship for 2010. Several projects are currently under
development in the areas of vocabulary and ontology management (representation,
storing, and querying), collaborative ontology authoring, and ontology
reasoning. We are seeking a
candidate with computer science/IT background and experience in biomedical
ontologies, classifications, formal knowledge representation, and description
logics. Research activities and
successful findings will be translated into development activities for existing
division projects, peer-reviewed publications, and extramurally funded research
programs. ·
Requirements: Enrollment or
recently completed an undergraduate or graduate program in Computer Science,
Biomedical Informatics, Information Technology, or related field. Candidates who have taken curriculum
and/or have a background in Semantic Web, Ontologies, and Web 2.0 technologies
will be given strong preference.
All candidates should have exposure to software development using an
object-oriented programming language with preference given to Java/J2EE
technologies. Specific skills in
the following environments and technologies are desirable: Eclipse, Protégé, OBO, RDF, OWL,
Reasoners (Pellet, Racer, FaCT++), UML, XML/XSLT, and Web services (Apache Axis,
REST). Knowledge of a scripting
language (PHP, Python, _javascript_) is desirable. The candidate should be highly
motivated, willing to learn and demonstrate initiative in assigned tasks. Must possess excellent analytical,
problem-solving, and technical design skills. Strong oral and written communication
and interpersonal skills are required. ·
Duration: This internship has
a minimum duration of 3 months (up to 6 months). Start and end dates are
negotiable. ·
