The clinical informatics group in the Division of Biomedical Statistics and Informatics at Mayo Clinic is offering a 3-6 month Summer/Fall internship for 2010.  Several projects are currently under development in the areas of vocabulary and ontology management (representation, storing, and querying), collaborative ontology authoring, and ontology reasoning.  We are seeking a candidate with computer science/IT background and experience in biomedical ontologies, classifications, formal knowledge representation, and description logics.  Research activities and successful findings will be translated into development activities for existing division projects, peer-reviewed publications, and extramurally funded research programs.

·        Requirements:

Enrollment or recently completed an undergraduate or graduate program in Computer Science, Biomedical Informatics, Information Technology, or related field.  Candidates who have taken curriculum and/or have a background in Semantic Web, Ontologies, and Web 2.0 technologies will be given strong preference.  All candidates should have exposure to software development using an object-oriented programming language with preference given to Java/J2EE technologies.  Specific skills in the following environments and technologies are desirable:  Eclipse, Protégé, OBO, RDF, OWL, Reasoners (Pellet, Racer, FaCT++), UML, XML/XSLT, and Web services (Apache Axis, REST).  Knowledge of a scripting language (PHP, Python, _javascript_) is desirable.  The candidate should be highly motivated, willing to learn and demonstrate initiative in assigned tasks.  Must possess excellent analytical, problem-solving, and technical design skills.  Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills are required.
