Peter, Thanks for documenting Bill's outstanding work and I posted a
link to it at the new wiki at http://nsfaccountingontology.wik.is/ (01)

We had, on Thursday 05-Jun-2008, another great session with invited
speaker Professor William E. McCarthy (Michigan State University), who
gave a very comprehensive talk on the Resource-Event-Agent (REA)
Ontology, which has, through the years, made it to accounting
literature and textbooks, as well as having attained the status of
international standards. The talk was entitled: "Ontologically-Driven
Standards Development for Business Process Systems." (05)
A huge "Thank You" to Professor McCarthy for the great session and for
sharing your work and insights with us. And as always, our
appreciations go out to all who joined us at the event; especially for
their contributions to the rich discussion during the last segment of
the session. (06)
Full proceedings of the session are captured on our wiki page, at:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2008_06_05 (07)
In particular, audio recording of the session, as well as the podcast
of it, is now available -
see:
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2008_06_05#nid1IIJ (08)
This contribution from Professor McCarthy, which one can view as a
follow-up from Bill's first talk on the REA Ontology, which he
presented at the Ontolog Forum back on 17-Mar-2005, is adding yet
another key piece of knowledge toward helping us bring about Ontolog's
mission of advancing the field of ontology through advocating their
adoption into mainstream applications and international standards.
Thank you again, Bill and everyone! (09)
Best regards. =ppy (010)

P.S. Again, we will be featuring Dr. Christopher Welty (from IBM
Research, and Chair of the W3C RIF Working Group) who will be giving a
talk on "RIF: Rules Interchange Format" this Thursday, 12-Jun-2008.
RSVP now, if you haven't already (by emailing <peter.yim@xxxxxxxx>
off-line.) (012)

*REMINDER* (018)
The Ontolog virtual event with invited speaker, Professor Bill
McCarthy (Michigan State University) is coming tomorrow - Thursday,
05-Jun-2008 (starting at 10:30am PDT / 1:30pm EDT / 17:30 UTC). (019)
According to Professor Bill McCarthy, the ontology spectrum of Dr. Leo
Obrst (MITRE) poses a challenge for researchers and developers trying
to build standards for business process interoperability, because it
envisions a notion of clear structural progress toward the goal of
full semantic expressiveness. In Bill's opinion, this notion of
structural progress needs to be augmented with the idea of domain
completeness which he considers to be the ability of a domain theory
to explain the separate and distinctly different aggregation level of
its theory components. (020)
In this session, Professor McCarthy will discuss these notions of
structural and domain progress by using the example of the REA
ontology (originally posed as an accounting domain theory) and its
realization in one final international standard and in one ongoing
standards development project: (021)
1. The Open-edi Business Transaction Model (ISO/IEC 15944-4); and (022)
2. The REA Specialization Module for the UN/CEFACT Modeling Methodology
(UMM). (023)
Bill will also discuss some more general ontology development ideas
that arose from consideration of these projects at the NSF-sponsored
Workshop on Financial Interoperability that just occurred Last month
(May 12-13 in Arlington, Virginia). (024)
Anyone interested in the topic, especially those working on developing
standards and can see the value in applying ontology methods and
formalizations, should come join us and exchange insights with Bill
and with each other. (025)
*RSVP* by e-mailing the sender <peter.yim@xxxxxxxx> off-line (if you
aren't already on the [ontolog-invitation] list, kindly include your
name, affiliation and job title as well) if you are planning to attend
and haven't already responded. (026)
We look forward to having you at the session. Please refer to all
agenda and call-in details on the session page, whose link appears at
the top of this message. (027)
Regards. =ppy (028)
