On Thursday 24-Jan-2008, Dr. Matthew West (Shell International
Petroleum Company), champion of the Ontolog "Database And
Ontology" series, presented the 12th and final episode of the
series. Dr. Holger Knublauch (Vice President for product
development at TopQuadrant) was our invited speaker for the
event. Dr. Knublauch gave a talk entitled: "Information
Integration Intelligence with Semantic Technology" and shared
with us the capabilities of the wonderful tool suite and client
applications that he and his TopQuadrant associates have put
together, in a really wonderful presentation. (01)
Proceedings of the session are captured on our wiki page, at:

In particular, full audio recording of the session, as well as
the podcast of it, is now available - see:

The Ontolog "Database And Ontology" series is a community-driven
set of activities which started back in August 2006 on the
prompt from Professor Tatiana Malyuta (CUNY). A planning session
came together shortly, which identified a Program & Technical
Advisory Team comprising Dr. Matthew West (Lead), Dr. Adrian
Walker, Professor Atilla Elci, Mr. Chris Partridge, Dr. Leo
Obrst, Mr. Peter Yim, Dr. Susie Stephens & Professor Tatiana Malyuta. (04)
Through the leadership of Dr. West and the guidance of the
advisory team, twelve (12) high quality virtual sessions were
presented between Oct.2006 and Jan.2008. The sessions touched
upon major facets on the topic of "Database And Ontology" and
drew some of the top experts in the domain as speakers and
participants. The talks and discussions that made up the 12
episodes included: (05)
2008.01.24 – Dr. Holger Knublauch "Information Integration
Intelligence with Semantic Technology" (06)
2007.10.18 - Dr. Alan Wu "A Scalable RDBMS-Based Inference Engine
for RDFS/OWL" (07)
2007.07.12 – Dr. John Sowa "Analogical Reasoning With and About
Databases and Knowledge Bases" (08)
2007.07.05 – Mr. Chris Partridge "Data and process revisited:
ontology driving a paradigm shift in the development of business
application systems" (09)
2007.06.28 - Dr. Souripriya Das and Dr. Melliyal Annamalai
"Building Database Infrastructure for Managing Semantic Data" (010)
2007.05.10 - Professor Tatiana Malyuta "Interaction of Ontology
and Database in the Information System" (011)
2007.04.12 - Mr. Edward Barkmeyer "Ontologies as the Next
Generation Information Models" (012)
2007.03.08 - Dr. Adrian Walker, "Usability, Databases and Ontologies" (013)
2007.02.08 - Mr. Martin O'Connor, "Efficiently Querying
Relational Databases using OWL and SWRL" (014)
2007.01.04 - Ms. Elisa Kendall, "The Ontology Definition
Metamodel (ODM): Motivation & Brief Introduction" (015)
2006.11.16 - Dr. Matthew West "From Ontology to Data Model:
Choices and Design Decisions" (016)
2006.10.12 – Panel Session: Dr. Matthew West, Dr. Tatiana Malyuta
& Dr. Leo Obrst (017)
These twelve sessions have all been archived and is now a key
contribution to the valuable body of knowledge on ontology and
ontological engineering that our community is building together. (018)
A huge "THANK YOU, ALL!" to everyone, who has been a part of this! (019)
Best regards. =ppy (020)
