Hello All, (01)
Just some thoughts on standards, etc for ontology. (02)
If you take the Ontology Spectrum idea presented by Dr. Leo Obrst as
showing that not all ontologies have to be a fully axiomized logical model
from the top of the spectrum, but that lower cases (controlled
vocabularies, thesauri, taxonomies) are also ontologies (albeit of
different usefulness), then there are certainly some standards - (03)
At least in the realm of thesauri and taxonomies, one could look at the
American Standard and British Standard guides on Thesaurus development, and
for a taxonomy (which is possibly a thesaurus based structure, but based on
meaning rather than term) then the ideas that are presented from the same
bodies on Multi-Lingual Thesauri prove to be interesting as well. (04)
Specific references include: (05)
Thesaurus Standards-
ISO 2788
BS 5723
ANSI Z39 (06)
Multi Lingual Thesaurus (weak taxonomy)
ISO 5964
BS 6723 (07)
A recent workshop paper where I explored these ideas is attached... (08)

Are there any ANSI, ISO or other standards for ontologies? One of our
scientists told me that there is an ANSI Ontology standard and wanted to
know more about it.
