Hi Peter and others,    (01)

Just a short note to clarfy EarthCube goals and its audience.
EarthCube is being run under the Geosciences Directorate which
includes three programs: solid earth science (called EAR;
environmental science maybe part of this program), Ocean and
Atmospheric Sciences. So ontology development should be inclusive of
everything related to the earth. The first seven planned and funded
domain workshops are from the EAR program (tectonics, geochemistry,
paleontology, petrology, etc), and other domain workshops from the
Oceans and Atmospheric programs will follow.
So your activities should be inclusive of use cases, and their
ontologic solutions from all three programs, and would fit well with
EarthCube semantics/ontology objectives. That was the reason I
supported volcanism and associated subdisciplines as a use case (in
the semantics roadmap submitted to NSF) because it involves all three
programs.
Therefore I would encourage all of you to reach out to geoscientists
in any of these programs to reach a broader domain audience.
Just for the record my primary research activties are within many of
the subdisciplines of solid earth science( tectonics, geochemistry,
geochronology,field geology,petrology,ore deposit, and volcanic
products), although volcanoes in the oceans comes under the ocean
science program.
We do have an opportunity to think very broadly about the earth, and
the kinds of ontology practices that would enable domain experts to
do better science.    (02)

Hope these comments help,
Krishna.    (03)
