Ninety-sixth meeting of the IAOA Executive Council (EC)
Virtual Meeting of 6 Feb 2014    (07)

Attendees:
Stefano Borgo
Michael Gruninger (Chair)
Marion Haemmerli
Janna Hastings
Oliver Kutz
Frank Loebe
Leo Obrst
Laure Vieu (Treasurer)    (08)

The President reported on the search for a Swiss institution interested in
hosting the IAOA. According to the collected information, hosting an
association in Switzerland is simple and low demanding. Several options are
being considered.    (09)

The EC aims to have a detailed plan for moving during April, when there will
be the 2014 IAOA budget approval. The EC is considering to open an IAOA
association in Switzerland before closing the Association in Italy. In this
case IAOA will be both active as Italian and as Swiss association for a
short period of time. Prior to these steps, the Statute and Bylaws will be
revised in accordance with the Swiss national laws.    (010)

The Treasurer verified that the Italian IAOA bank account can be managed
entirely in English, including times for phone service in English. This
opportunity allows the new Treasurer to act with the current bank account.
Hence, the change of the IAOA bank account can co-occur with the overall
change of the IAOA location. The EC decided to update the Bylaws to include
a paragraph on the new position of Membership Officer with its rights and
duties.    (011)

The FOIS organizers announced that Nicolas Asher will be the third keynote
speaker at FOIS 2014. The list of FOIS workshops is almost complete and will
be distributed soon. Moreover, the EC was informed about the schedule for
early and regular registration. Further discussion is required for
scheduling the assignments of the student grants. Tentatively, registration
fees shall be fixed by end of April, such that early registration can start
in May.    (012)

The EC was updated on the second meeting of the SIG "Semantic Web - Applied
Ontology" (SWAO). Elie Abi-Lahoud, Mike Bennett, and Andrea Westerinen act
as co-chairs of the SWAO SIG, Leo Obrst is the IAOA EC liaison. A request
for a dedicated mailing list is under consideration. The SWAO SIG has
decided to support the Ontology Summit 2014 because of the topic of this
year, namely "Big Data and Semantic Web Meet Applied Ontology". The SWAO SIG
further considers organizing a workshop at the International Semantic Web
Conference (ISWC) 2014. IAOA members interested in the SWAO SIG and its
activities are invited to contact the SIG chairs.    (013)

The Secretary proposed a new IAOA position for a "Public Relations Officer"
("PR Officer"), in order to overcome bottlenecks with website updates and
news distribution. The EC agrees with the proposal. Filling this position
will be pursued in coordination with the Public Relations Committee.
Overall, the EC agrees to examine the Standing and Technical Committees of
IAOA, e.g., for due membership updates.    (014)

Ninety-seventh meeting of the IAOA Executive Council (EC)
Virtual Meeting of 20 Feb 2014    (017)

Attendees:
John Bateman (Chair)
Marion Haemmerli
Oliver Kutz
Frank Loebe
Fabian Neuhaus
Leo Obrst    (018)

Oliver Kutz provided the EC with some updates on the organization of FOIS
2014. Notably, Clarisse Sieckenius de Souza is invited as the fourth FOIS
keynote speaker. The EC notices that the Interdisciplinary Summer School on
Ontological Analysis as well as the Early Career Symposium at FOIS may not
yet receive good attention and suggests more prominent advertizing for them.    (019)

Leo Obrst reported from the 3rd meeting of IAOA's youngest Special Interest
Group "Semantic Web - Applied Ontology" (SWAO SIG). For a first
SIG-initiated event, a workshop proposal is being prepared in order to be
submitted to the International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2014) by mid of
March. Members interested in joining the effort are still welcome and should
contact the SIG chairs. Formally, the SIG is still in a setup process, among
others discussing the involvement of interested persons. The EC acknowledges
the SIG's request for a working environment as it is available for other
SIGs (e.g. mailing list, file and wiki spaces). The request will be
forwarded to IAOA's service provider.    (020)

The EC notes that several of the Standing and Technical Committees of IAOA
require membership updates. Respective members will be contacted in the near
future. A partial restructuring of the set of committees is under
consideration, as well.    (021)

The Secretary summarized the state of affairs concerning the 2014 EC
election and 10 Advisory Board memberships ending regularly at Dec 31, 2014.
The EC agrees to arrange the scheduling of the EC election such that its
results can be announced ca. one week before FOIS 2014. A ballot on three
positions is currently expected. Rough scheduling and the setup of the
Election Committee will proceed in due course. For maintaining the Advisory
Board in about its current size, a discussion of options has started and
will be continued in the next meeting.    (022)

In connection with relocating IAOA to Switzerland, a host for the
Association has not yet been determined there. A number of options are
further under consideration.    (023)

(End of Report)    (024)
