Posting update per earlier conversation with Bob Smith. Will follow up later today with excellent suggestions from David Cox regarding the FLIPP explainers.

I have talked with Kimon Onuma and he is going to provide 10 sample models probably by the end of this week. The AIA convention is going on and actually there is not a rush for the samples.

I have organized a small group of architects at WDG plus my boss William Pegues a fellow at CSI to evaluate these building models when they arrive. Sample templates will be created for each building type like the fire station. The margin of error will probably be like the fire station work in progress. In other words, I prefer the classification to be 2 or 3rd level max to achieve better coverage for more buildings.

It would be good to get David Conover at ICC involved***. He sent a message about using the codes to help classify the buildings too. I was looking at a CD set and the real way this is handled is a code summary on the first couple pages. The codes really should be a level above the whole model in the OCCS Table 11 range.

I don't know if you have heard of FLIPP explainers by David Cox but essentially they are logical structures you can run questions through. I've just asked him what he thinks about MF2004>UniFormat>OCCS fitting into a FLIPP, then what might happen to hit this data structure with a barrage of, for example 92 criteria evaluated by 17 factors like your situation in California. We'll see what he says. (initial response was sent and may be extremely helpful will follow up later today)

Either way, a set of 10 templates with a tolerable margin of error can be completed in the next......two to three weeks. Probably just make a Photoshop illustration of groups of questions but the point is to actually process them through to document optimal paths.

Michelle also had a good set of questions regarding valves and construction materials, same with Toby's shut down air handler 2 scenario.

***MORE ON SMART CODES: The energy dictionary is nearly completed ICC is working their way through all the codes, accessability is going on now which is much easier for model checking than the energy codes. For example, if a certain knee clearance is needed under sinks and counters, the ICC creates a fictitious volume to cruise through the model to make sure the proper clearance is indicated. Once all their dictionaries are done, the smart codes themselves will get started
