Friends,    (01)

With support from the State University of New York at Buffalo, Barry
Smith and I are in the process of forming the National Center for
Ontological Research, an organization to promote fundamental research
and education in the development and application of ontologies (see
http://ncor.us).    (02)

NCOR's mission is focused on:    (03)

1. Providing information about and contributing to the coordination
of ontological research in the United States, including facilitating
partnerships of various sorts among NCOR's different partners and
catalyzing major cross-disciplinary research projects.    (04)

2. Fostering high-level ontological research via the development and
application of methodologies for the evaluation of ontologies and
ontology-based tools.    (05)

Barry and I would like to invite you to attend the official
inauguration of NCOR, which will take place in Buffalo on October 27,
2005.    (06)

A preliminary program of the inaugural meeting is provided below. A
series of private meetings will also be organized, designed to
facilitate networking among the various government, academic and
industrial bodies who have expressed an interest in the work of NCOR.    (07)

Further details, including details of subsidized hotel rates in
Buffalo, will follow in due course. Those of you who wish to be
involved in NCOR planning should feel free to contact Barry Smith or
myself.    (08)

With all good wishes,
Mark Musen (Stanford)
Barry Smith (Buffalo)
NCOR Directors    (09)
