- Discussion (98L)
- Bob (98M)
- Adam (98S)
- Mark (98W)
- Important issues with respect to ontology development... not sure those issues will resonate with Braler (98X)
- Adam (98Y)
- Decision influences arguements that can be made... can show him why it matters... range of additional arguments (98Z)
- Mark (990)
- Part of a complete breakfast... upper ontology as part of a complete ontology... people are focusing on lists of codes and terms... need to incorporate in a broader pitch about semantics in information (991)
- Bob (992)
- Objective is to clearly identify an ontology policy... 24 questions (993)
- Look at project home page... think that have achieved interest... clear ontology policy... Adam has expressed his arguments... ontology policy is central... let's read through tasks and determine agreement (994)
- Ontology of RFI team: Have had crisis in healthcare going back at least 30 years... Rector does an excellent job describing historical effort and bumpy road... instead of looking at all heathcare and ontologies, suggest looking at what Brailer has developed and how that suggests ontology policy... Defne key terms... get clear straw man in next week and a half (995)
- Other two parts comprise about 22 questions... Envision something simlar to what Adam and Kurt did to develop framework for EIDX workshop... meld ideas into a single recommendation (996)
- Obvious reality checks around completion by deadline (2005.01.18)... Approximately 1-3 pages per question (997)
- Not all questions need to be adressed... looking for gaps, ambiguities, and issues with what they have already done... Brailer and 6 of staff, partially aligned with SICoP group (998)
- Does this seem like a reasonable breakdown (999)
- [Nods of agreement] (99A)
- Bob (99B)
- Discussion of the work breakdown? Start with limitation of the scope... Develop strawman definitions... Bo, Kurt, and Bob have taken responsiblity for enterprise topics... (99C)
- Adam (99D)
- Think that we need a central thesis... can answer questions indivdiually, but won't necessarily be coherent without a unified approach... areas of obvious alignemtn are greater than where need further discussion, but need to make central thesis... an essential first step (99E)
- Bob (99F)
- Or a learning process that emerges (99G)
- Adam (99H)
- Writing without alignemnt will likely produce disconected sections... not sure that we have time to "realign" (99I)
- Bob (99J)
- Also missing a problem statement: what is, what's missing, how go forward... The central thesis could come out of the problem statement... define the problem first (99K)
- Adam (99L)
- with ameture ontologists crating terms from scratch without reuse, utilization of known philosophical and ontological principles, done in different representaiton langauges and languages that are not capable of formally capturing the semantics of what they need to express (99M)
- Mark describes list of specific examples of problems (99N)
- Mark: (99O)
- Adam (99R)
- "room for improvement" (99S)
- Mark (99T)
- Despite enormous investments (99U)
- Bob (99V)
- Ontology policy: short term or long term pain (99W)
- Mark (99X)
- ensrue that people will be able to use: available, non-proprietary... truely public standards for interoperability (99Y)
- Adam (99Z)
- open source, like SUMO (9A0)
- Mark (9A1)
- Bob (9A3)
- 24 questions... nice to have a protege / sumo representation, but those themes have been clearly identified... threads are there in the questions... we might consider tacking parts w/o addressing ontology policy... question is integrating the SnoMed problem (as identified and reflected in 3-4 of questions)... (9A4)
- Adam (9A5)
- Shouldn't be a sumo vs protege issue... (9A6)
- Mark (9A7)
- Open content and open k representation languages and open source tools to manipulate... 3 separate issues (9A8)
- Bob (9A9)
- Intent to accomplish this in 10 years, not stated when clock starts... have seen how adaptive Protege has been in last decade... SUMO is open and appears to have that capability... we can kind of (in ontology policy) can identify current, should be, and would be changes in a reasonable timeframe... when do things need to be done at regional/state/federal levels? (9AA)
- Mark (9AB)
- don't know how to respond to an RFI (9AC)
- Bob (9AD)
- you just got done with final exams and had some way to grade them, right? (9AE)
- Brailer wants suggestions for improving what he has already stated... answering questions objectively, taking our best shot... he has a way to integrate responses... 550 people on conference call... interest spanned industry and consultants... (9AF)
- Kurt (9AG)
- logistics of answering 24 questions? (9AH)
- Adam (9AI)
- draft thesis... review... assign questions to inviduals (9AJ)
- Nad (9AK)
- do we need to answer all 24? (9AL)
- Bob (9AM)
- Agreement: Mark, Sampson, and Adam will work on one page overview to guide answering of questions (9AP)
- Bob (9AQ)
- put page under team one... how long will it take? Before Jan 6th? (9AR)
- Mark (9AS)
- One can take a stab and the others can embellish (9AT)
- Bob (9AU)
- that gives the rest of us guidance and insight before Jan 13th (9AV)
- Put some materials on RFI page and was especially interested in making people aware of paper by Jane Kroch, under What's New section, second item... Presentation delivered at Claremont on December 3rd... Gave us permission to post it on the web... CareSciences... my assumption that that's where Brailer is coming from... Mark, do you know if many attended Claremont conference (9AW)
- Mark (9AX)
- Not many from my circle, first time that I've heard about it (9AY)
- Bob (9AZ)
- reasonably succict outline... collaborative group suggesting that this is appropriate... think that it makes sense to examine for strengths and weaknessess (9B0)
- Adam to start on draft (9B1)
- Bob (9B2)
- Mark (9B5)
- right after the new year... all of us reading email from home, but hourly employees given vacation (9B6)
- Bob (9B7)
- So January 6th looks like good date for integration conference call (9B8)
- January 13th for web wiki workshop? (9B9)
- For EIDX, built a framework and had an intense session... recorded digitally, massaged and turned into a final paper which was circulated for comments... seemed like a good way to make use of wiki and individual creativity in a collaborative sense, w/o undue time pressures on most (w/ exception of Kurt)... that give sus 4 days to circulate and massage references and conclusions before the 18th (9BA)
- Kurt (9BB)
- how about capturing first drafts of responses to questions on 6th/7th? (9BC)
- Bob reviews and loooks for alignment / issues... drafts list of topics / question for discussion on 10th / 11th... (9BD)
- Should put us in a better position for review on Thursday, the 13th... also allows individuals to submittt rougher drafts of materials for initial collection in 1st week of January (9BE)
5) Other business (9BF)
6) Next meeting date and adjourn (9BG)
