Agenda Ideas (7QY)
Agenda & Proceedings (7QZ)

- KurtConrad took the chair and welcomed everyone (7R1)
2) Appointment of secretary to take minutes (7R2)
3) Roll-call of participants (7R4)
4) Face-to-face meeting (November 5-8, 2003) (7R6)
- see: post & wiki-page (add in link) (7R7)
- (7R8)
- Dates -- (after we figure out who's attending first) (7R9)
- who's coming -- Kurt will follow up on this (7RD)
- Yes: Adam, Peter, Kurt, JohnYunker (7RE)
- Virtually: PatCassidy (7RF)
- agenda (7RG)
- possibility of inviting other UBL / standards folks to join us during the session. (Peter & Kurt to follow up; suggestions welcomed) (7RH)
5) Communication logistics & work protocols (7RI)
- a. Standard toolkit (7RJ)
- Sevcenko's KIF-browser "kifb" - that's up on our environment already (see: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/kifb ) (7RK)
- Adam's SIGMA knowledge engineering environment - which Adam is trying to get MikeDaconta & PeterYim get set up. Should be running in a few days. That will set the path towards people sharing the environment or install for their own use. (7RL)
- Adam stressed that the important thing is to have more people developing content. So far, Kurt is the only one trying now. Definitely need more people. Hopefully, a tutorial will be the bridge. (7RM)
6) Utilization scenarios (7RN)
- a. Enabling "autonomous behavior" (7RO)
- Question from Kurt: "what would our ontology potentially enable?" (7RP)
- Adam: helping people with specifying the "right" items on their purchase order, such as conforming to import/export restrictions, or tax issues (7RQ)
- John: helping with "context" (especially the process context) which then help drive the content and the applicable rules (7RR)
- like "knowing" regulatory requirements, tax issues, given the seller and buyer countries of origins (7RS)
- John mentioned that UN/CEFACT has an addendum on "context". John will look it up and post the info to the forum. (7RT)
- Kurt: this takes us out of modeling the documents as containers of data elements, but modeling the objects (items being purchased, buyers, sellers) concerned. (7RU)
- Pat: the issue also involves representing the intentions (7RV)
- in relation to harmonization, JohnYunker did work (as editor) on the specification of "Business Entity Types", document-object-state dependencies. Moving some of the linking to a meta-level and be able to capture that. (7RW)
- John: the key value is to provide a structure by which the process, document and object views can be rationalized against each other. (7RX)
- Question from Kurt: "what would our ontology potentially enable?" (7RP)
7) Formalization (7RY)
- a. Stable set of UBL concepts at http://ubl.cim3.org/~lcsc/lcsc-distribution-v1-0_alpha/UBLv1-alpha/ (7RZ)
- they are deemed to be stable enough to work on (7S0)
- the spreadsheets still form the "source" of their work, and they can be found under the "sss" directory (7S1)
- Kurt suggests we mine these spreadsheets to get a list of the concepts that we would need to formalize (7S2)
- Kurt: to achieve what we are doing, we would need to match the conceptual scope of UBL. (7S3)
- Adam: beware - scope vs form (7S4)
- Monica: question - how do we deal with identifier that carries meaning, versus id's that only serves to uniquely identify an object (7S5)
- Adam: ontologies will ... (7S6)
- Monica: how about the UDEF framework (7S7)
- John: there is no real semantics in their framework. One shouldn't use it for anything more than just as identifiers (7S8)
- Kurt and Adam will get together for lunch (possibly Fri 10.3.03) to go over the spreadsheets. (7S9)
8) Sponsorship and funding (7SA)
- a. Inventory NIST contacts (7SB)
9) Other business (7SE)
10) Next meeting date and adjourn (7SH)
