Ontology Summit 2008: Launch Event - Thu 07-February-2007    (17TZ)

Conference Call Details:    (17U0)

Attendees    (18XP)

Background    (18Y0)

This is our 3rd Ontology Summit, a joint initiative by NIST-Ontolog-NCOR (along with other co-organizers and co-sponsors.) In an earlier thread on the Ontolog Forum back in Dec-2007, we announced the plan for this initiative for Spring 2008. That and subsequent solicitation for topic and planning support were answered with positive and enthusiastic contribution from the community. The theme adopted by the community for Ontology Summit 2008 is: "Toward an Open Ontology Repository."    (18Y1)

We are launching "Ontology Summit 2008" here. This will be three months of virtual discourse that culminates in a two-day face-to-face workshop (April 28 & 29, 2008 at Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA) as part of the NIST Interoperability Week 2008 program. At this launch, we will be introducing the "Ontology Summit 2008" objective, organization, process, deliverables and preliminary plans to you, and we welcome your ideas and participation.    (18Y2)

Topic: Ontology Summit 2008 Launch    (18YE)

The theme of the 2008 Ontology Summit is the vision of an Open Ontology Repository. This vision forms the basis of the Open Ontology Repository community, and this year's summit will support the effort to produce such a repository (or set of repositories) by serving as a venue - both virtual and face-to-face - in which many of the issues relating to the design, implementation, and ongoing use of an ontology repository can be discussed and ultimately resolved. In particular, these issues will include the themes of the 2006 and 2007 Ontology Summits (Upper Ontologies, and a framework for classification of ontologies, respectively), and this year's summit will thus also provide an opportunity to revisit the conclusions reached at those two prior meetings.    (18YG)

The 2008 Ontology Summit begins with today's launch event that begins a series of topical online discussions, all of which come together with a face-to-face meeting on April 26-27, 2008 in Gaithersburg, MD at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).    (192E)

Questions, Answers & Discourse:    (18YO)

KenBaclawski: The OOR begins with "Open" but I haven't seen any discussion of what this means.
Is it entirely obvious? Many important ontologies are highly restricted.
How do such ontologies affect openness?
Is this an issue that should be addressed somewhere?

Son Doan: Thank you very much. It is very interesting for us.
I will tell to our group about this event.    (19A5)

An Open Invitation    (18YY)

If you do find this initiative interesting or useful, we cordially invite you to join us in the "Ontology Summit 2008" virtual discourse that will be taking place in the next 3 months or so, and to the face-to-face workshop that will be held on 28 & 29-April-2008 as part of the NIST Interoperability Week in Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA.    (18YZ)
