This is a very good start.

Attached is a reformatted version with some points added and a comment.

I will not be back on email until after 5.

Folks,

I took  a pass at enumerating potential topics for the Tues Mar 14 event. Comments and  suggestions welcomed. Offering these to the Org Committee first, prior to posting to the entire Convenors list.

Thanks,
Leo

Upper Ontology Summit Issues: Opportunities and Challenges<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

March 14, 2006

I. Points of Agreement:

1)    We desire semantic interoperability.

2)    We agree that a mere taxonomy is insufficient for that.

3)    We agree that axioms are an indispensable part of creating semantic interoperability.

II. Opportunities and Challenges:

1)    Modularity: How to Achieve? Incompatibilities?

a.    Lattice/poset of theories?

b.    3-D vs. 4-D vs. 3-D/4-D

c.    Other?

2)    Mapping among the terms/axioms of the relevant upper ontologies

a.    Term to term maps

b.    Bridging axioms

c.    Finding consistent common interpretation subsets

d.    Create a reference library of upper ontologies

e.    Express in a common language: SCL, IKL?

3)    Identifying an intersecting subset of terms/axioms of the relevant upper ontologies

4)    Evaluation and certification of ontologies

III. Next Steps:

1)    Create a consortium or working group

a.    Align with existing standards organization?

b.    Independent: New committee under NCOR, ECOR, JCOR: Upper Ontology Reconciliation and Mapping Committee?

2)    Seek joint funding to address (II) and (III.1)

3)    Other?
