Dalia,
I don’t think we want to necessarily address just Semantic Web technology, though that assuredly will be a major component. The focus of Ontolog itself is on
ontological engineering, but as we have shown in the past, the actual kinds of semantic models range over a spectrum, with different levels of expressiveness and complexity, and address often different use cases, and applications (along with tools).
But I don’t think we can go deeply into auxiliary disciplines such as NLP, data/text-mining, etc., because doing so will take us far afield. We can recognize
that information extraction, NLP, data/text-mining, cloud computing, etc., will be additional necessary technologies even for robust ontology-based Earth Science. But they are not our direct focus in this mini-series. At least, that is the way I see it.
Thanks,
Leo

I think that we may somewhere want to be a little more specific about whether we mean (are working with the proposition of) specifically 'semantic web' type of semantic technology and approaches,
or a broader range of semantic technology and approaches, including natural language processing, text-mining, geoparsing, and others.
Yes, this reads real well! Thank you, Krishna and Leo.
ALL: May I suggest that we open this to comments and edit suggestions
until end-of-business tomorrow (Thu Aug-2), and then adopt it
(hopefully, unless there are huge controversies and need to be further
deliberated.)
... That way, we could focus on coordination and implementation of the
mini-series program during the Friday Aug-3 organizing committee
conference call.
For ease of access to everyone here, I have just put this Sinha/Obrst
writeup (in doc and pdf formats, besides the original docx format)
under: http://ontolog.cim3.net/file/work/EarthScienceOntolog/wip/
Thanks & regards. =ppy
