Forty-fifth meeting of the IAOA Executive Council (EC)
Virtual Meeting of 14 July 2011    (07)

Attendees:
Nicola Guarino (chair)
John Bateman
Stefano Borgo
Michael Gruninger
Ali Hashemi (invited)
Riichiro Mizoguchi
Leo Obrst
Peter Yim
Laure Vieu    (08)

The EC invited Ali Hashemi - newly confirmed co-chair the of the IAOA
Visibility and Public Relations Committee - to join the meeting to discuss how
to improve the visibility and the public relations of the association. The EC
recognized that the Association needs to make an extra effort to publicize its
view, activities and initiatives. One important goal in this effort is to
familiarize the community on the goals of the Association, ongoing work and
ways to interact.
The EC has decided that Ali Hashemi will be regularly invited to the EC
meetings with the specific task to help us (re)designing and implementing our
visibility and communication strategy, and immediately convert into
communication and visibility actions what the Association does.    (09)

The EC also encourages members to be active on the IAOA member mailing list and
on other channels (e.g. social networks) to spread ontology news and
discussions.    (010)

The Standardisation Coordination Committee reported that the proposed standard
initiative on Ontology Integration and Interoperability (OntoIOp) was formally
accepted as an ISO/TC37/SC3 new work item (during the June 2011 meeting in
Seoul, Korea). This work - identified as ISO/TC37/SC3 NP 17347 - will soon
commence.    (011)

On behalf of IAOA, the EC welcomes this exciting news. While IAOA does not
endorse specific standards, IAOA may help inform standardization activities and
provide guidance when it comes to specific issues, like those relating to the
definition or the role of ontologies. The Association will do so, as need be,
through the Standardisation Coordination Committee.    (012)

(End of Report)    (013)
