I received this message today (together with at least some of you, I guess). I believe we should discuss about the policy to adopt with respect to these iniatives... Let's add this point to the next meeting's agenda

Subject: IBOSS body members
Dear Prof. Nicola Guarino, You have been recommended to be in the emerging international non-profit research organization.
Please let me know if you are in or out of the project. If in, choose the program fitting to your taste. Find below the suggested body members and the listing of standards programs (committees).
We seek to cover a wider geography as possible. Please find below the modified listing as the proposed body of the International Body for Ontology and Semantics Standards (IBOSS): ¨ Patrick Cassidy (MICRA, Inc. 908-561-3416 cell: 908-565-4053; cassidy@xxxxxxxxx, USA); ¨ Barry Smith (Director, National Center for Ontological Research, phismith@xxxxxxxxxxx, University at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY 14260, USA; Research Director, Institute for Formal Ontology and Medical Information Science, Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany,http://ontology.buffalo.edu/smith, http://ncor.us, http://ifomis.de, http://obofoundry.org, USA, EU); ¨ Pat Hayes (Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC), 40 South Alcaniz St. , Pensacola, FL 32502; phayesAT-SIGNihmc.us,http://www.ihmc.us/users/phayes; (850)202 4416 office, (850)202 4440 fax, (850)291 0667 mobile) ¨ Doug Lenat (President and CEO of Cycorp, Inc. of Austin, Texas, email@example.com, http://www.cyc.com/, Cycorp, Inc., 7718 Wood Hollow Drive
Suite 250,Austin, TX 78731-1601, tel.: +1 (512) 342-4000, fax: +1 (512) 342-4040, USA);
¨ Riichiro Mizoguchi, Director of the Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research of the University of Osaka, miz@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,Osaka, Japan) ¨ Hideaki Takeda (Director of the Research and Development Centre for Scientific Information Resources, National Institute of Informatics, Osaka, takeda@xxxxxxxxx, Japan). The IBOSS Directorate is to be voted as soon as the final listing will be established and agreed. Following the open world assumption, who is not insisting to be marked off the standards list, is in. After all, we are not making a sort of policy, but a new science and technology. As John Sowa proposing, the IBOSS is to be registered as a Non-Profit Organization: "a trust, company or other association of persons:- (a) established for a public purpose, and (b) the income and property of which are not distributable to its members or office bearers except as reasonable compensation for services rendered." Among the benefits are: bringing the ontology standardization effort into a formal system; accounting to a public office; being organized in mind and action; tax incentives and global funding opportunities; influencing the global scientific policy. As a place of registration, Cyprus, having a big experience of international companies hosting, could be a very reasonable and practical place. Any valuable suggestions are most welcomed. A nice weekend to all.] You are welcome to communicate with our knowledge engineer, Richard McCullough, to discuss the required design features as well as the content you are willing to contribute. Also please specify in which standards program you would like to be. STRATEGIC MISSION: Ontology and semantics standards for science, technology and industry. The IBOSS activities are planned to cover the following special standards programs:
Ontology Standards and Upper Ontologies;
Ontology Standards, Science and Technology: Metadisciplinary Sciences and Global Research Area; Ontology Standards and Web Knowledge Resources (Wikipedia);
Ontology Standards and Semantic Interoperability
Ontology Standards and Formal Logic;
Ontology Standards and Domain Ontologies;
Ontology Standards and Modeling Languages; Ontology and Semantics Standards and Natural Language Formalization;
Ontology Standards and Semantic Web Technologies (Language standards, rule
Ontology Standards and Industry Standards;
Ontology Standards and Business Process Interoperability.
Any your suggestions are welcomed.
Last but not least: send your proposals, which topics could be submitted for getting international public funding from well-known funding agencies, like EC FP7 programs and the US NSF. Thanks a lot.
