[09:35] anonymous morphed into alexgarcia [09:37] MichaelGruninger: Are Ramesh Jain's slides available in PDF? [09:39] PeterYim: == session start 9:38am PDT [09:40] anonymous2 morphed into DavidPrice [09:42] alexgarcia: where are Chris slides? [09:43] PeterYim: @MichaelGruninger, there are alternate pdf versions of the slides under http://ontolog.cim3.net/file/work/OntologySummit2011/2011-03-24_Grand-Challenges/ ... the pdf's won't carry all the information of the ppt's though [09:43] PeterYim: @AlexGarcia - ChrisWelty will not have slides (as indicated on the session page) [09:45] PeterYim: will those participants who are still recognized as "anonymous" please morph into your real name (click on the "Settings" button at the top center and change there) so we can know who's here and properly attribute contributions [09:46] anonymous1 morphed into David Makovoz [09:46] ChristopherSpottiswoode: @peter: How do we see the slides in the downloaded zip files? (Please excuse my ignorance!) [09:46] RexBrooks: I assume that "Shallow Methods" doesn't include deep ontological resources, e.g. triplestores. Correct? If so, how was the semantic "meaning" of text sources derived? [09:47] anonymous1 morphed into CG Chute [09:56] PeterYim: @ChristopherSpottiswoode - when your click on the slide links (like [o-Chair], [2-Jain], etc.) they should not be zipped; it should fire up on your browser right away, or call up the associated app (if your browser is configured to do it, and the right app is available) [10:02] PeterYim: @RamSriram (or any of the co-chairs) - would you please capture ChrisWelty's suggested "Grand Challenge" problem(s) onto the chat-board [10:02] CG Chute: The slides (for Jain at least) do not "open up" but come down as an odd zip file. [10:02] RexBrooks: 75% own Mobile Phones? nSounds awfully high to me. [10:03] ErnieLucier1: Chris Weltys grand challenge problems oImproving diagnosing, especially where you do not have existing diagnosis oDrug interaction [10:03] PeterYim: @MichaelGruninger - your hand is still up, can you type your question here (if you have one)? [10:04] anonymous1 morphed into AnnaCianciara [10:05] PeterYim: === RameshJain presenting now [10:11] AldenDima: @RexBrooks - according to Wolfram Alpha, it looks like there are 4 billion cell phones (using 2004-2008 data). There are probably more now. [10:11] RexBrooks: In Emergency Management this is referred to as crowd sourcing and what the whole process does is "curation" of the situation as a way to include information from the public in decision making. [10:12] RexBrooks: @Alden: guess I'm just behind the the wave ;) [10:14] AldenDima: @Rex - me too. Still have a box full of slide rules hanging around. [10:16] alexgarcia: I have problems oppening the this speakers slides. is there just a ppt file? I oppened and all I got were a lot of xml files -power point does not recognize them [10:18] alexgarcia: sorry, but it is probably me not knowing about this format for slides, I just can not open them.... I get a lot of xml files that power point cant deal with [10:18] AnnaCianciara: The pdf for this presentation seems to be available here: http://ontolog.cim3.net/file/work/OntologySummit2011/2011-03-24_Grand-Challenges/Ontology-based-Recognition--RameshJain_20110322a.pdf [10:18] alexgarcia: Could someone upload the ppt file for this talk? [10:18] alexgarcia: thanks [10:19] EliotSiegel: Peter, I have a hard stop at 1:30 to meet with the Dean [10:19] EliotSiegel: Eastern time [10:20] EliotSiegel: yes [10:24] Ramesh Jain: I will need to logout in 5 minutes. So any questions can be answered off-line. [10:24] anonymous2 morphed into Chris Frangione [10:28] PeterYim: Thank you very much, Ramesh [10:29] PeterYim: @All - Ramesh's email is available at his page on the OntologWiki - http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?RameshJain [10:32] anonymous1 morphed into DilvanMoreira [10:36] PeterYim: @AlexGarcia - would the pdf be good enough? (if not, you might want to email RameshJain yourself and ask him for a ppt version of the slides (I only received the pptx ... and any conversion will be somewhat lossy) [10:39] RexBrooks: It's good to see how far these questions have been explored and difficult areas identified. Getting these disparate, sometimes legally quarantined, datasources into a system that will allow a genuine "Big Picture" to be developed and resourced as needed. [10:39] RexBrooks: Is a problem. [10:40] PeterYim: == ChrisChute presenting ... [10:40] anonymous1 morphed into Dustin Cote [10:47] AlanRector: Her name is Tania Tudorache [10:51] Chris Frangione: Peter - Just as an FYI, I am online with you all now. [10:52] LeoObrst: Just joined, had meeting. [10:54] PeterYim: @ChrisFrangione - Hi! [10:55] alexgarcia: I'd say how do we use more than just DL, there is ontologocal pluralism. OWL is not the one and only [10:55] David Makovoz: Question for Dr. Shute. Did you look into probabilistic ontologies? [10:58] CG Chute: I understand that DL subsume a family from simple FL- through SHIQ or more sopphisticated ones. I confess I am not familair w/ probablistic DLs, though I have heard of probablistic ontologies (though I don't know as much as I should). [10:58] PeterYim: == NabilAdam presenting ... [11:00] PeterYim: slide#2 [11:04] alexgarcia: Bartholomew-Frangione's slides, could someone upload a ppt or a pdf for those slides? I have downloaded the zip file and it has a lot of xml, again my power point cant deal with those files -probably it is just me not knowing how to deal with this files. [11:06] David Makovoz: Dr. Shute. Examples of probabilistic ontologies are bayesowl, prowl. They've been around for a while. [11:06] CG Chute: Thanks, I will look into them. [11:07] Bobbin Teegarden: I would also be interested in hearing more about 'probablistic ontologies', a future presentation here? [11:11] PeterYim: slide#6 [11:12] SteveRay: @Alex: Those slides are in .pptx format (i.e. Powerpoint 2007). For now, I suggest you view the slides through the VNC shared screen viewer. [11:12] AlanRector: Pragmatically, at the moment, my view is that the issue is more how to combine the strengths of probabilistic systems and DLs rather than look to integration. DLs/OWL are good at providing a framework, but they do only certain limited reasoning tasks. [11:13] PeterYim: @Bobbin - we had a session on Ontolog Forum on "Probabilistic Reasoning and Ontology Evaluation" a little while back - (in case you weren't aware) check out http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2007_03_29 [11:14] Bobbin Teegarden: thanks for the URL Peter. [11:20] David Makovoz: The 2007/03/29 conference is mostly about prowl. Bayesowl is not presented there. [11:21] PeterYim: indeed ... time to do another update session ... (please suggest to [ontolog-forum]) [11:23] PeterYim: == ChristopherFrangione presenting ... [11:24] PeterYim: slide#15 now [11:28] PeterYim: slide #20 now [11:32] SteveRay: Thanks for a very interesting set of talks. [11:33] PeterYim: -- session ended: 11:33am PDT --
